I started this thread originally to see if anyone like me felt limited on variety of food. Maybe i should have explained a little more. My husband has to watch his diet for hidden sugars in foods. Therefore we had to re evaluate our shopping by checking all the hidden 'ingredients' in everything we bought. That was in simple things like baked beans, soups etc...I wasnt referring to buying microwave easy meals - even though there isnt anything wrong with them when your pushed for time there more than handy. Its just when we did choose something in the supermarket and it had too many hidden sugars i couldnt check it with a couple more brands. Im sorry if i insulted any aussies - my husband lived over there from being a 1 yr old to being 16 years old. We ve visited many places in europe who have alot less people living there but their shopping places still had lots of choice. Even menorca whose island is only 15 miles wide by 30 miles long had more choices in their major supermarkets. Its just australia does have quite a population for the size of their supermarkets which in my ignorance i didnt expect. But once again im sorry for insulting anyone.

Stef I don't think you have insulted anyone, as you have now explained, you have a reason for wanting more choices in your food shopping. It wouldn't matter where you live these days, for whatever reason food producers love saturating everything with salt, sugar, E numbers and god only knows what else. For someone who has to look out for these little surprises or as with the previous poster who's wife was a vegetarian it must get more than a little tedious reading every label to make sure of what's in it. As a matter of fact maybe everyone would gain from reading what they are actually stuffing in their mouths.

With the way some threads go on here I think this one has remained fairly reasoned and could actually still be called a debate, that's the joys of t'internet you never know the reaction till you post it.

I really miss Sainsbury's and their two for one offer.

They had a special on peeled prawns 2 for £5.99. Missus went and bought some when they reduced the price a little (use by date) for a Spagetti Marinara.

I decided we need some more to have a decent feed.

By the time I got there the price had been marked down to 99p. Well it took me a while to find other stuff to the value of £5.

Went to check out.
+ 0.99 first lot of prawns
- 5.99 credit on second buy
then used the £5 credit for the other stuff.

Total cost to me of £5.99 worth of goods?

Nothing. ZIP.

Checkout chic was really puzzled about this but said that was the total.

I should have acted on a larger scale, bought all the marked down prawns and done a full weekly shop. :D I could have bought some of the famous SE Australia wine :D Friggin' big bit of dirt SE Australia :D :D

TIP: look for all 2 for 1 offers that are perishable and marked down

WW

Switch is much much better than EFTPOS as it's now chip and pin (has been for over a year), you can guarantee cheques with it and you can pay for stuff online and over the phone.

No, you cannot pay online or over the phone with EFTPOS.

Re: I need tesco

To the point in question though - UK supermarkets are definitely cheaper, I still get shocked here when I have to pay $3.50 for a loaf of bread :faint: !!! UK supermarkets are designed much better, feel nicer places to shop, have much better selection of fresh fish and meat and have good special deals BUT Aussie supermarkets usually have in stock all of their goods which was never the case in my local Sainsburys which often sold out of the most basic foods.

As usual a cross between the Aussie Way and the UK way would be the best. Why oh why cant there be a country like that? (and one thats a lot closer to Europe) ;)

How comes I'm doing that then ?

I get my Homeside NAB eftpos card, that has a visa attachment and pay for all bills with it, either on the net or over the phone.

I've done the same for the past 18 years, since I first got a "debit" not "credit" 'Resi Card', who became the bank of Melbourne, who became Westpac. I will admit it always had a Visa Attachment, however it was a "debit" and not a credit card, and used primarily for eftpos non debt transactions.

You've got a Visa debit card. A 'regular' EFTPOS card can only be used with the holder present.
