You can used Eftpos on the Bpay network, over the net, plus most banks have a pay anyone service, for those companies that dont have Bpay.

So the new priviliges of switch are negligible over what aussie has had for at least 18 years. IE: paying in over the phon to a non Bpay holding merchant ? which ones bank can arrange for you anyway.

I don't get on this forum much but when I do I occasionally enjoy the rapport and debate, sometimes I either receive or give advice or help, and quite often I learn something. And today I learnt something.

Today I learnt that you Scossie are a prat.

You know the comment I am referring to and if you either want to retract it or just send me a PM explaining it then I would be grateful.

Little tip for those lucky enough to be returning to shop in Sains/Tesco/Asda (or other UK shops come to that!) - if your Aus credit/debit card has the little chip thing - YOU WILL NEED A PIN NUMBER in the UK now. Mine don't have the chip, which confused Tesco no end, till they worked out how to do it the old way with me signing for it. PIN nunber didn't work, cos there is no chip, but not all checkout people are prepared for this eventuality, exp if they are Saturday kids/temp staff.

Until 14 Feb 2006 retailers are allowed to override the PIN system and you are allowed to sign for your purchases.

Yeah, my mate told me that. But what happens then? my Aus cards are valid till 2008/9/10 or something, but have no chip so have to be signed for..........does this mean I can't use them in the UK?
I shall check up with the likes of ANZ when I reach Aus, but be interesting if anyone knows.

We also visited Tesco, my mate paid on a debit card through the new automatic check-out thing, which I had not seen in action before. It asked for his card, so he swiped it, but it didn't ask for either a signature or a PIN. We checked with a staff memebr who confirmed it was correct. So if you found a debit card in the street, it appears you could just use it with no check at all done on it........
He's living in the UK and has not encountered this before so we would both be interested in any responses.

I think that with overseas cards you'll still be able to sign for things - pretty much in the same way I've done in France where chip & pin cards have been the norm for years now.

Regarding the automatic checkout - yep it is crazy. There are self pay pumps at Tesco's - and a tank full of diesel currently costs me over £60. All you do is pop the card into the machine and that's it! Scary stuff :scared:

I do remember paying for fuel in Oz a while ago and the operator swiped the card and gave it back to me......before I signed the slip. It's been like that in the US for years too.

Hardly surprising that card fraud is so high.
