How is the selection process for IT jobs ?
#1
Hello,
I have read in other post that one person has passed through 7 interviews to get a job, is it normal ? why the need for a company to do 7 interviews to an applicant ?
Well, in my country it's easy to get hired for an IT job, is it difficult in Australia and especially Sydney ?
How is the selection process for IT jobs in Australia ?
Is it easy ?
By 'easy' I mean for example:
Day 1: You send your CV
Day 5: You get a call from the company requiring you to do a knowledge test tomorrow
Day 6: You do the knowledge test in half a day and the employer says you that you are hired tomorrow
Day 7: You begin working
Is it difficult ?
By 'difficult' I mean protracted, for example:
Day 1: You send your CV
Day 7: You get a call from the company requiring you to do a knowledge test the next week
Day 14: You do the test in half a day and the employer says that they will call you
Day 21: You get a call from the company requiring you to do other knowledge test the next week
Day 28: You do the test in half a day and the employers says that they will call you
Day 35: You get a call from the company requiring you to do a psychological test the next week
Day 42: You do the test in half a day and the employers says that they will call you
Day 49: You get a call from the company requiring you to do other psychological test the next week
Day 56: You do the test in half a day and the employers says that they will call you
Day 56 to 80: Doing interviews with X, Y and Z person
Day 100: You begin working
Thank you for any opinion

There is obviously not a standard process, each company makes up its own, but I would say "in the middle" somewhere for a professional IT job.

OK, and normally, how many test they require ? 2 knowledge tests and 2 psychological tests and 3 interviews ? ... yes, every company is different, but what would do most IT companies ?

It varies alot. Gov jobs might spend more time on hr policy, and I know suncorp do the 7 interview thing.
Normally you apply for a job, and about 4 months later they come back and say that they are interested in interviewing you.
The worse thing is the 10 page requirements response document which you are expected to put in with your application..

My usual experience of interviewing has been a knowledge test a couple of 1 hour chats with line manager then departmental manager and then a job offer. With Macquarie Bank this was the process followed but they added on a 2 month wait because the HR department are totally useless. I know when we were recruiting there we lost good candidates because they gave up waiting for the forms.

I work for the biggest IT integrator in the world. The recruitment process consisted of a 30 minute discussion about AFL.

If you are going for a technical job, most places require a technical test of some sort and at least one interview but most likely two.
I am not technical so dont need to do any tech tests, but on occasion have had to do logic tests and personality profiling prior to interviews. I have never interviewed for a job without at least 2 interviews and sometimes a phone interview. My job is client facing so communication ability is key.
I would say you may wait longer than 5 days for your initial meeting and the chances of starting work on day 7 are small, but it all depends on the company. Once I have a job offer, I try to negotiate in some holiday time between jobs, its unpaid but so worth it!

When I applied for jobs they were usually via Seek and I nearly always had to go for an interview with the recruitment agency first. Then they would put me through for the job if they thought I was suitable.
