how much to furnish a 2 bed house in Oz??
I know there's been threads on this before but can't find them.
We'll be looking at a 2 bedroomed house. We have a bed already so don't need that.
All we're lookin for initially is -
Sofa x 2,
Coffee table,
Dining Table and 4 chairs,
Guest bed,
Fridge,
Washing Machine,
Dryer
Microwave
Wardrobe x 2
Chest of Drawers x 2
Anyone got any ideas??
I have about £3000 set aside here ( not sure what that is in $'s )
Much appreciated!!

I found this thread useful for a rough idea of cost of some household items,
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=372834
My currency converter says £3000 = $7,314.066

From my experience you can furnish a house very cheaply here if you need to, as furniture is available in all price ranges and £3000 could easily cover all the basics if you arent concerned about buying good quality stuff. Electricals are probably similar price to uk but if you go to Good Guys and rer it all in one go you should be able to negotiate a good discount and they sell most brands. You may also find that you dont need to buy wardrobes as nearly all places here have built in wardrobes.
If you want any further info please let me know.

Re: how much to furnish a 2 bed house in Oz??
You can get cheap sofas for say $500 each,
Coffee Table should be less than $100
Dining Table and 4 Chairs maybe $500+
Bed from $200-300 or ffrom $800 for double/queen
Fridges are relatively expensive. You will need 400L + which could be $1000+
WM from $500
Dryer under $300
Micro from $80
May not need any wardrobes as many homes have built in robes (BIRs)
Drawers from $60
So for entry level stuff you'll be looking at under $4000

Cheers for that guys,
We're a bit fussy so looks like we'll have to hike up the £3000 budget to around £5000 for furnishings.
You reminded me to take our oil heater as well - forgot that Melbourne winters can be COLD, and that heating doeasn't really exist as expected here in the UK!
I'll be taking things like kettle, iron and buying a vaccum cleaner here.
Already got a bed but will get a guest bed when we get there.
While we're on the subject, can anyone advise me what's required when applying for a house rental? I can get stuff together before we go if I know what they want.
Cheers again guys,

You usually have to pay a bond - ours was 4 weeks rent - you get this back at the end of your lease minus any costs if there is damage to the property.
We were able to pay 6 months rent in advance (money talks !!!), and we had bank statements to show our bank balance and also a letter from our UK estate agent saying that our flat was in excellent condition, etc when we sold it.

Re: how much to furnish a 2 bed house in Oz??
being scabby students we were always on the lookout for the cheapies when kitting out the house.
got all of the furniture, bar one bed (super Amart); and all the kitchenware from ikea
2 queen beds
2 queen matresses
2 matress toppers + bedding (quilts, covers etc)
2 desks
2 bookcases
tv unit
small bookshelf wi doors (for dvds)
HUGE corner sofa (my pride and joy) & a couple of cushions
diningroom table and 4 chairs
lamps
winerack
cutlery
plates
glasses
all for about $5000, and it's all really good stuff (ikea wise!)
for small electricals we were to wow sight and sound... were by far the cheapest for dvd players, set top box, various ipod accessories, printer, wireless router etc probably got all of that for about $5-600
electrical we were to the electric discounter
www.theelectricdiscounter.com.au
under cut everyone else by a huge chunk. walked away with a stainless steel walk in fridge/freezer (well almost - one of thos big double door thingies), and a really good "hit one button - does it all for you" LG washer for $2000 inc delivery.
all in we probably spend about $8k kitting out the house, and we've got all that we need, and all farily decent stuff as well (for being on a budget!)

Re: how much to furnish a 2 bed house in Oz??
Hi, I've just furnished a 3 bed house here in South Australia - here are some of the costs for you.
Queen size bed - $250 (just the base, but really nice)
Queen size matress - $899 (there is much cheaper ones, but we wanted one that would last)
Kids cabin beds - $280 (Ones with storage space underneath to save on buying cupboards)
Single matress - $499 (same again )
Corner lounge - $500 (last one in shop)
2 seater settee - $299 (bargain!)
Coffee table / dining table and 6 chairs $899 (All match and got $200 off for buying all of them)
Microwave - $89 (about average price for a decent sized one)
42 inch Plasma TV - $1999 ($300 discount for buying washer, TV, microwave and a set top box for the TV which cost $129)
7.5kg load washer $599 (Price matched from $899 - next model up to what we were quoted for)
Fridge Freezer - $915 (reduced from $1599 for paying cash and buying the TV as well)
Also a dyson vac for $369 !!!
You can pick up some real bargains if you shop around. Also a good tip is to get a quote from one shop and take it to another similar shop and they will price match it, plus if you get a few things from the same shop they will give you a discount for cash

Good to hear from you. Hope it's everything you thought it would be.
Cheers for the costings. Did you take any UK stuff with you, and wold you reccomend I take anything specific with me - household-wise that is?!
