Default How to find Work in Melbourne

Hi everybody,

Just arrived to Melbourne and trying to get into the jobhunting stage.

I´ve been recomended to get the Saturday Age, but it appears that there is no IT jobs in it.

How have fellows IT workers managed to get a job in Melbourne?

Any advise will be appreciated...

Enrique.-

Hi Enrique

Have you tried looking at the online job sites?

http://www.mycareer.com.au/
http://www.seek.com.au/

They have quite a bit of IT positions there.

Good luck.

Just started looking into them this morning. Hope that the whole "fake ad" thing is a myth...

Does anyone have additional advise?

Wish me luck...

contact agencies direct. make an appointment to see them - they will work harder to find you a job if they've met you and you have discussed what you are looking for.

There are a lot of IT agencies in Melbourne but I can recommend Candle Recruitment, Michael Payge, and Greythorn

I found www.jobnet.com.au to be a good site for IT - personally found it better than seek.com

Good Luck

Some advertisements might invariably be fake. But I can say from personal experience that some would be quite genuine indeed. Can't comment about Melbourne positions - I'm in NSW.

Try a bit of cold calling, by phone / personally, companies likely to need your skills:

Yellow Pages

As HP suggests you have to knock on some doors and use up some shoe leather as well as look at the websites and newspapers. The government job website also gives some general information about employment prospects in each occupational category:

RSMS stands for Royally Supported Migration Scheme. You must know someone in the royal family before you can get the application forms.

Ah, the old regional sponsored migration scheme, mystery solved.

Talking and shaking hands with PA is sure to get you on the other RSMS scheme. (What's happened to Fergie incidentally? She was never out of the news at one time)

Well, if we're showing off, *I* got to meet Princess Di and shook her (rather skinny) hand, and also nearly threw a tea bag at Prince Andrew when he was a student here in Cambridge...

...so there!

Think it more likely to get me sent to the Tower than get a visa...

Anya.
