Default How disgusting are Aussie sweets?

I'm quite partial to a Cherry Ripe myself, but saw this article in today's Telegraph suggesting that most sweets in OZ are barely disgestible.

Anyone got any fav aussie sweets - or are they really that bad???

Aussie oddballs

Other countries' sweets are never quite as good as your own. But ex-pats or those who want to know how teeth-rottingly good British sweets are (we lead Europe in consumption), should go to the retro-sounding www.cybercandy.co.uk, which specialises in American and Australian sweets. Australian sweets really are a breed to themselves.

What to make of Pascall Clinkers, Pollywaffle (described by one reviewer as "perhaps the least edible form of food to be found anywhere, ever. It is an affront to humanity. I would rather eat chocolate-coated glass") and Caramello Koala ("cute little marsupial made of chocolate and filled with creamy caramel. You'll have to unwrap one to discover how anatomically correct it is." Probably not as risqué as it sounds.)

hehehehehe Well, I discovered my local corner shop has "Golden Crumbles" which are Violet Crumbles in UK packaging and even made in Australia, so definitely the real thing. I was chuffed to bits and bought 5!!! My (English) husband reckons that Aussie chocolate tastes like Dog Chocolate but he is wrong!

I miss:

Chicos (chocolate jelly babies)
Spearmint Sticks
Snakes Alive
Chocitos
Jaffas
Fantails
And most of all, Violet Crumble.

I think squirms are very yummy. Chocolate wise I rate Dove triple chocolate very highly.

The Golden Crumble that Superdrug sells is a Violet Crumble in disguise.

Bananas, Life Savers, Fruit Tingles, Minties, Kool Mints, Bellis apricot fruit bites, Black Jelly Beans, Musk Sticks, Licorice blocks, ................. etc

Morrison's sell Darrel Lea soft eating licorice which is one thing I really miss. They also sell genuine Anzac Biscuits, most supermarkets do Vegemite now and Tesco sell Arnott's Tim Tams as has been well documented. I don't think the fare on offer is too bad but I was brought up on them!

Alas, Australia is going the same way as the UK. Nestle took over Rowntree's of York (to get the Kit Kat, Polo Mint etc) and they have taken over some of Aussie's best such as Hoadley's, Allen's, MacRobertson's etc.

You end up with most of the brands in bothcountries being owned by Nestle, Masterfoods (Mars, Dove, Galaxy etc) and Cadbury Schweppes. Campbell's took over Arnotts and now all the biscuits have been reduced in size and all the sweets everyone has named above are not as good as when I was young. The globalisation of the sweets market!

I love Cherry Ripe too - but did you know that if you eat the kingsize one you would be seen to be over the limit if breathalysed

Starbursts are basically the same as UK ones, but has a cherry one too.

Dove chocolate equates to Galaxy.

As to others - there are nice ones, and crap ones - like anywhere..

What confused me (doesn't take much) is that sweets are called lollies here, as are lollies...........

I'm going to have to try violet crumble. Is it like a crunchie bar?

My Husband reckons it's like a turd covered in dog chocolate but I think it more like "old fashioned" homemade honeycombe covered in chocolate. Similar to a Crunchie but not as "fizzy" if that makes sense?

Hi Michelle

I'm pregnant too and having loads of choccie cravings so yep I agree with you. I will do the same tommorrow. I love honeycomb, esp the old fashioned kind. I also want to try cherry ripe too.

Australian sweets aren't as bad as that quote made out. But then again I have been here a while, and tastes do change
But, I've always loved the Cherry Ripes
