How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
I'm quite partial to a Cherry Ripe myself, but saw this article in today's Telegraph suggesting that most sweets in OZ are barely disgestible.
Anyone got any fav aussie sweets - or are they really that bad??? :D Aussie oddballs Other countries' sweets are never quite as good as your own. But ex-pats or those who want to know how teeth-rottingly good British sweets are (we lead Europe in consumption), should go to the retro-sounding www.cybercandy.co.uk, which specialises in American and Australian sweets. Australian sweets really are a breed to themselves. What to make of Pascall Clinkers, Pollywaffle (described by one reviewer as "perhaps the least edible form of food to be found anywhere, ever. It is an affront to humanity. I would rather eat chocolate-coated glass") and Caramello Koala ("cute little marsupial made of chocolate and filled with creamy caramel. You'll have to unwrap one to discover how anatomically correct it is." Probably not as risqué as it sounds.) Phil |

Michelle Bananas, Life Savers, Fruit Tingles, Minties, Kool Mints, Bellis apricot fruit bites, Black Jelly Beans, Musk Sticks, Licorice blocks, ................. etc Morrison's sell Darrel Lea soft eating licorice which is one thing I really miss. They also sell genuine Anzac Biscuits, most supermarkets do Vegemite now and Tesco sell Arnott's Tim Tams as has been well documented. I don't think the fare on offer is too bad but I was brought up on them! |
Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
Alas, Australia is going the same way as the UK. Nestle took over Rowntree's of York (to get the Kit Kat, Polo Mint etc) and they have taken over some of Aussie's best such as Hoadley's, Allen's, MacRobertson's etc.
You end up with most of the brands in bothcountries being owned by Nestle, Masterfoods (Mars, Dove, Galaxy etc) and Cadbury Schweppes. Campbell's took over Arnotts and now all the biscuits have been reduced in size and all the sweets everyone has named above are not as good as when I was young. The globalisation of the sweets market! OzTennis :) |
Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
I love Cherry Ripe too - but did you know that if you eat the kingsize one you would be seen to be over the limit if breathalysed  :D
Starbursts are basically the same as UK ones, but has a cherry one too. Dove chocolate equates to Galaxy. As to others - there are nice ones, and crap ones - like anywhere.. What confused me (doesn't take much) is that sweets are called lollies here, as are lollies........... Cas |

Katie My Husband reckons it's like a turd covered in dog chocolate  but I think it more like "old fashioned" homemade honeycombe covered in chocolate. Similar to a Crunchie but not as "fizzy" if that makes sense? Michelle |

Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
Nope, it's the King size freddos :D
Or wait, is that just me eating them all? :p According to the ingredient list, the chocolate shouldn't taste all that different, apart from the fact that Aussie chocolate contains more cocoa and more milk and no vegetable oil lol. Although I heard somewhere that it has more hazelnut flavours in it. British Cadbury Dairy Milk: Milk, Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Cocoa Butter, Vegetable Fat, Emulsifiers (E442, E476) Flavourings. May contain traces of nut, wheat & soya. Cocoa Solids 20%, Milk Solids 20% Australian Cadbury Dairy Milk: Full Cream Milk, Sugar, Milk Solids, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Mass, Emulsifiers (Soya Lecithin, 476), Flavours. May contain traces of nuts. Cocoa Solids 26%, Milk Solids 27% |
Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
I had M&M's at the weekend. They definately didn't taste as nice as in the UK. But then it may just be a matter of taste, what you are used to.

Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
I just tried one of the Cadburys Boost bars which have recently been launched over here. (been available in the UK for probably 15 yrs)
This used to be my favourite in the UK (so if I go past a british sweety shop I tend to buy one even though there about $3.50 a bar :scared: ) so them finally coming to OZ was a pretty exciting time  I can honestly say having just tried one it is the only chocolate bar I have ever had to spit out and throw away, it was disgusting ( I should of realised given a plain bar of Cadburys is pretty rank over here...) What a let down, I cant see the logic in releasing a product to a market, branding it identically to one that has sold for years elsewhere and completely changing the way it tastes  Surerly they either decide to sell them into the OZ market for one of two reasons: a) Because of demand from people who have eaten it in the UK (I dont know of it being sold elsewhere in the world) b) Because of its popularity and success elsewhere Either way surerly it needs to taste the same ??? Rant over  There must of been to many E numbers in it :D |

Seriously though, it may be too much Cocoa in it. I tried the 85% cocoa chocolate recently, and must admit that it didn't agree with my taste buds !! But I think they need more here to stop it melting to fast. |

Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
Actually, I have just had a phone call from Cadburys to explain it !
I emailed them to ask why it would be so different, and got a phone reply back within 20 minutes !! Whatever the chocolate is like, Customer Service is FAST. It comes down to many things, one of which is the grass that the cows eat, which in turn provides the milk. The recipe used is also different, to accommodate the results of tests done in the Australian market, to ensure that the final taste is suitable to the majority here. So... the bottom line is that Australian and British taste buds are different. Now... I wonder if they will give me a free tour around the Cadbury factory :D |

I went to Coles to get a few bits of shopping, I went to the lollies aisle and to my disappointment found they had sold out of violets crumble. It is on special this week. Over a dollar off, so grab it while you can.

I wonder if they will give me a free tour around the Cadbury factory :D Swiss, Belgian, French etc chocolate manufacturers tried to get a ruling from the EU that British chocolate should not be given the title chocolate because the cocoa levels are too low and the milk and non milk fat levels are too high or something like that. They lost their case and it can still be called chocolate in the UK. I find Cadbury's in both countries pretty insipid (but still edible!) compared to Lindt, Milka, Ritter, Toblerone, Nestle etc but each to their own. OzTennis :) |
Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
It must come down to individual taste. We Aussies love our Cadbury! :D
Must say I'm looking forward to trying British Cadbury when I go to England at the end of the year, though :) |

Heehee, I fully intend to make a side trip to the Birmingham factory. For, er, research purposes, of course :D . Nothing at all to do with my unholy addiction to chocolate ;)

Must say I'm looking forward to trying British Cadbury when I go to England at the end of the year, though :) Now..... it's metric equivalent is smaller and they have dropped their famous slogan because it doesn't have the glass and half anymore! Enjoy it nevertheless - 'because you are worth it' to pinch another slogan. It's interesting from a marketing viewpoint (well I think so anyway :D ) how chocolate ads target woman and appeal to motives of self-indulgence. 'Why have cotton when you can have silk' is the subtle Masterfoods plea to eat Galaxy/Dove rather than the 'cottony' Cadbury opposition. 'And all because the lady loves Milk Tray' (after the James Bond exploits to get the choccies to the lady). Do you remember when you had to love someone enough to give them your last Rolo? Well now the ad has changed, it's 'sod them' you have the last one, they're that good - a sign of the times I guess (me, me, me) OzTennis :) |
Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
I love Nestles mint slice - delicious
|
Re: How disgusting are Aussie sweets?
I love all the milo products over here, especially the milo bars.
Haven't really found any sweets or chocolates that we don't like yet, maybe that's because I have such a sweet tooth and will eat anything! |
