How is Brisbane for IT jobs?

I am in a "trilemma" over choosing Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane. Melbourne's weather seems to be unfavorable to me. Canberra is too quiet.

Brisbane? IT?

Of your 3 cities listed, in terms of IT jobs going Brisbane would be 3rd by a LONG way - in IT circles Brisbane is a VERY small town. CAnberra may be socially quiet, but has a thriving IT community since its essentialy a 'white-collar' city existing purely to populate federal government departments (all of whom are pretty big customers in the IT world).

Brisbane by comparison is comprised largely of regional offices often with nothign more than skeleton support services for major corporates (who prefer to have head offices with IT departments in southern states), state government (who are the largest IT employers) and a VERY small number of local corporate head offices (Suncorp, Flight Center, Boeing).

There are IT jobs in Brisbane, but it's certainly quieter than other cities. However, more and more companies are opening up here. I was talking to someone recently who said that IBM were considering moving into the new business park being built in Redland Bay....and if they do then others will too.

My hubby is in IT and we are in Brisbane. He's not found it a problem finding jobs and good IT networks up here.

There are IT jobs in any town, Just don't expect Sydney wages.

If you expect to be flexible in your technology focus (diversify your skill base, because specialist IT jobs probably will be thinner on the ground)

If you can adapt to the market then there's work to be found..... I think I'm trying to say don't be picky :-).

As an aside, have you considered Perth? it has a pretty good IT community there from what I am led to believe

Many people will just trot out the mantra that Sydney and Melbourne have the most IT jobs. This is true but I think the ratio of jobs to applicants is the most important one - look for the town where jobs are outpacing applicants. Sydney/Melbourne would be best if looking for a very specialised area. Before the GFC there were many articles discussing the Brisbane IT boom that also talked about the rapidly increasing head office/major office work here. We also have a few very large software houses. General unemployment has also been lower in Brisbane and Perth.

I think it is all in a holding pattern Australia wide at the moment though.

Just had lunch with an ex-colleague who's been struggling for work since december last year.

After a few months of looking in Brisbane and having no success (looking for work in Dec/Jan is always tough) - he widened his search and got a 3 month poorly paid contract in Adelaide, which he took to keep himself afloat. Unfortunately that contract didnt get extended as the whole operation got outsourced to India.

He's now back in Brisbane scratching around for work again (looking ANYWHERE) and said in the last 2 weeks he applied for 100 jobs nationwide, got 6 responces resulting in 1 interview. Granted this guy isnt the most impressive candidate in the world, but even so I'm surprised he hasnt found something. Its a pretty damning endictment of the situation out there.

(FYI: guy in question is an experienced j2ee developer, Indian background but with poor communication skills and no supervisory/team lead experience)

Just hosted a new British immigrant who works in IT (business intelligence which is on the qld state skills list) - he got a good job with a major company in 3 weeks - so for some there is hope

Our place (large software house) still has an employment freeze.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was thinking of moving around year end but now I feel I need to postpone it for couple of months more . Anyways, I have to enter Australia before 21st may 2010. It's ironical that jobs are moving in opposite direction.

J2EE ten a penny. So many other applicants to compete with it's not funny. Unless he is absolutely exceptional I can see why he is struggling to get work.

Business intelligence is a niche area and demand for these skills is high with generally there being more jobs than applicants.

Yeah figured that given the demand he had - nice to see the Qld skills list matching up with actual demand Well done list compiler.

I am looking for a job requiring high specialization in Linux/Unix systems administration, not some Windows click-click Jack of All Trades .

A search for "Linux Systems Administrator" at Seek returned top results in the following order: Sydney(57) > Melbourne(50) > ACT(22). I am avoiding Sydney; too many applicants. So Melbourne and ACT are the ones to go for.

I have found too many J2EE and .Net programmers moving to Australia but found very few with Unix/Linux skills moving to Australia. So, what is your opinion about ACT (Canberra) for this type (Unix/Linux) of specialized profession?

Question Re: How is Brisbane for IT jobs

Hello Everybody,

What about Darwin for IT jobs?
If someone got an offer to work for an IT Servces Co. in Darwin should it be considered?
Also what sort of salary should a Systems Engineer expect in Darwin.

Please reply.

Regards,

Purely on those figures(22 and 50), given the population sizes, that seems like Canberra wins....plus with your inbuilt feeling of superiority over poor windows sys admins you'd fit right into Canberra

You should accept if you want to live in Darwin I guess. Given that it is a very small city you might have to move for your next job depending on what's going at the time. Darwin is meant to have the most positive growth outlook over the next couple of years, then Adelaide I think.
