Default House rental & Car hire - new arrivals??

Briefly looked through site for subject matter/reference but found nothing so I apologise in advance if I missed it.

Ok, looking to move in the Autumn 08 and wondering whether generally migrants opt for short term holiday let or long term let on arrival.

Also, we'll need a car so do migrants buy a good second hand or hire one upon arrival.

Any advice would be appreciated and any contacts would be helpful.

MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE

Both questions are really on your personal preferences and not "migrant" preferences .... you may not ultimately like the suburb you are in if you take a long term rent, on the other hand gives you stability if thats what you want. Also for a car.... depends on what you have for funds, second hand cars are expensive here, alot buy new and salary sacrifice, so renting a car can be an option if you want to research.

Personally id take a short term rent to do the research for something i want, and if i can afford it a very cheap second hand car - say hyundai excel or something under $4000...... but up to you

How do you insurance a car, if you buy one, not hire, if you have no fixed address, ie you are staying in a temp holiday property

Doesnt matter really - just put the whole lot on a credit card. The address is for correspondence normally. In Australia they insure the Vehicle whether its at a fixed address or not. At the end of the day you;ll be chasing them if you need to make a claim.

In WA you dont need insurance per-say. 3rd party cover is included in the rego. Insurance only covers you for fire/theft and comprehensive.

We booked in to short term furnished accommodation and it was definately worth its weight in gold. There are a few expats who offer a meet and greet service one is http://www.accommodate-oz.com.au/ and the other is www.moving-to-melbourne.co.uk who also provide you with a rental car during your stay.
The above two are for Melbourne for Brisbane you could try http://www.brisbanebound.com/ or for perth http://www.activemigration.com.au/perth-meet-and-greet/
Good luck with the planning, it's not long now
