We stayed at the Travelodge Soutbank which is in the city and as the name suggests is right next to the Southbank. It's good and central and fairly cheap. Food court a couple of minutes walk away. Link below.

We thought it was great value for money.

I too stayed in the Travelodge on the South Bank. Would recommend it.
Excellent location, excellent hotel, excellent staff.
It's about 20 mins from the airport to the city centre from memory. We just arrived at the airport, and were going to get a taxi, but used a transfer company that had a desk by the luggage belts. Didn't cost much, and got took in a minibus right to the hotel door.

Hi we stayed at travelodge Southbank too. Agree with the other comments. Central, cheap and clean. About 30-40 mins from airport.

I think cab fare from MEL to city is about $45 but cant be sure, I gothere a lot but rarely check the receipt.
Australia has a huge amount of "appartment" hotels; search on that term. These, for example will have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, WM and Dryer, kitchen with cooker, hob FF and lounge space.
You could look at MEDINA or many hotels in the ACCOR group.
For an indea in advance of pricing etc try www.wotif.com.au
