"HOONS".......What???
#16
There was a programme on TV a few weeks ago about the drag racing problem. Basically tho, the hoons just move around the city - by the time someone has reported them to the police, they've had their fun and moved on.
My sister and brother-in-law (he's an Aussie and they live 500kms out of the city) stayed over the weekend and the first thing he said when he woke up Sat morning was "jeez, sounded like a race track out there". We live in Kew, which is essentially a quiet residential area and get woken 3-4 nights a week.
Earplugs are the way forward!

Bondi Beach used to be Hoon heaven until Campbell parade was narrowed. Brighton Le Sands is now one of the Hoons favourite places to do burn outs with da Fully Sik automobile.

They used to do it Hamilton - it's hilarious. They just drive round and round the centre of town on a Friday night. You stand on the corner and look at every car, and every car is a hoon - stopping at a pedestrian crossing, then accelarating madly for all of oh, 50 metres, then stopping at some lights again.
Queen St in auckland is the same.
They're a menace on the open road or motorways, but around town the pretty harmless. Noisy but harmless. If you live in the right places you can avoid them. A lot of them are actually quite responsible and treat like a serious hobby. Their modified cars are worth a lot of money and htey can't afford the insurance on them, so they dare not drink and drive, as it might wreck their pride and joy.
That said, there's a lot of much less responsible idiots as well....

Re: "HOONS".......What???
an example....
makes my previous comments about them being 'harmless' sound untrue.... but by and large, in my experience they were fairly harmless (but perhaps they've changed)
--------
Rioters in Mt Maunganui leave police helpless
27.10.2003
12.45pm
Police were driven back by a hail of beer bottles when they tried to quell a mob of up to 500 boy-racers doing burnouts at Mount Maunganui last night.
Senior Sergeant Tim Masters said the Main Beach end of Marine Parade was full of cars and onlookers about 1am.
When patrols tried to restore order they were met by a barrage of bottles.
The outnumbered officers were forced to park at a safe distance until the crowd dispersed about an hour later.
The rear window of one police car was broken by a bottle.
"We just did not have the numbers to do much about it. Unless you have an army of cops, it is like walking into a minefield," Mr Masters said.
He said part of the problem was that the riot-equipped team police squad had not yet formed for summer and there were not enough officers on duty last night with the equipment to deal with the situation. No arrests were made.
Marine Parade resident and Tauranga district councillor David Stewart said it sent the wrong message to the hoons.
It was a real pity there was not a very strong police presence in Tauranga because Labour weekend set the theme for the rest of the summer.
He feared boy-racers would text message their friends by phone with the news to say Tauranga was the place to be.
"It is really worrying when police can't respond. A strong police presence is so important," he said.

Sadly, you seem to get the hoons pretty well everywhere.
We used to live down near Logan (not a nice place) on a fairly main road. I was once going to count the doughnuts and skid marks and burn up marks etc along the length of the road (about 2 miles). I had to give up - partly because there were so many I lost count, but mainly because it was hard to distinguish where one set finished and the next set started.
No we live up near the bay - much nicer area. The big difference is that the hoons up here use their own cars rather than just stealing one.
Even in the "nice" areas you will see the tell tale skid marks. Brainless idiots in powerful V8s and turbocharged japanese penis substitutes who cannot drive for shit feel obliged to try and leave most of their tyres at any intersection or set of lights.
I blame the parents

If you are looking at areas, look at the road markings and you'll get a good idea of the level of activity and visit at all times of day and night before you buy.
Good luck

Well thanks everyone for your replys, I take it that HOONS are everywhere. They appear to be different to UK boyracers in that here they tend to have frontwheel drive cars, bit poncey for a burnout if you know what I mean. Also they do tend to have small engined non-Turbo charged cars, mention the word V8 and they would be laughed out of the insurance broker.
The last boyracer car I can remember that was rear wheel drive was the Ford Capri, longsince departed. The last V8 I remember was the Rover SD1 3500, even longer departed.
Another deciding factor is cost of petrol which is double if not triple what it is NZ and OZ.
Somebody mentioned Japenese penis extentions, well as the owner of Nissan 300zx I'm marginaly offended!!! not really
Cant afford to do burn outs tyres too expensive!!!
jase
