Hooking up a job whilst outside of the country, feasible?
My 175 application is underway, my career is on the MODL and critical skills list (computer professional with J2EE)
When it comes to getting a job in Australia, how flexible are companies and recruiters likely to be when it comes to hiring from outside the country? In the ideal situation we would have enough $$$ to fly out, living off that reserve for x months whilst seeking employment. We would like to avoid that approach if feasible, for the cost but principally to minimise risk (the chance that we couldn't secure a job in that time).
Looking at the job market, most recruiters and companies aren't interested to talk to candidates unless the visa is firmly granted, which is understandable. But even once it is, what is the liklihood that companies/recruiters will always insist on a face-to-face interview in Australia
Having gone through several processes of hiring candidates myself, I would be reluctant to hire someone without meeting them. But I have the luxury of having viable candidates geographically close by. Given the apparent desperate skills shortage in Australia, are employers likely to be flexible when it comes to hiring? Eg, deciding based on telephone interviews alone, webcam interviews, meetings at the skills Expos, interviews conducted at satellite offices in Europe?
Moreover, would recruiters/companies even consider starting interview discussions whilst I am outside of the country?
Any advice gratefully received,
General Zod

Re: Hooking up a job whilst outside of the country, feasible?
i have a third interview with a company in south melbourne tomorrow (I am in north london). my situation is slightly different in that i am 9 years aus, 1 year uk and looking to return soon so i have local exp.
if i didnt, knowing the australian way it would be 99% of time, call us when you land, unless you are a brain surgeon or a nurse
Dont take it to heart if you dont hear anything, make sure you have $ to ride it out

It'll depend very much on how specialist your skills are.
If your skills are still genuinely in demand then you may have more luck.
Otherwise I'd suggest that a) you may find that the skills shortage is not so great in the current economic climate and b) agencies and employers will want to meet with you face to face before putting you forward for jobs.

Re: Hooking up a job whilst outside of the country, feasible?
I had a job here before arriving - I researched what organisations did my line of work then emailed them asking if they had anything going. One got back with a vacancy asking me if I would like to apply. I had the interview over the telephone.
It really is to do with supply and demand. The fewer people available to do your work the more likely they are to hire you. Unfortunately though where I am it appears that there was nobody willing to do my job for the pay which is on offer, rather than nobody around to do it.

I managed it. Two job offers with different companies, all done with telephone interviews and video conferencing.
However, I you may struggle if you're a tradie....
