I'm a lorry driver in the UK, considering doing the same in OZ.
First of all, you need to take into account that EVERY state has different laws regarding transferring your license to the OZ equivalent. Some will just let you do it, no sweat, others require assessments and practical tests and a few $$$$'s!
Where are you heading?
The basic equivalents are: (If I remember correctly)
HGV II - Heavy Rigid (HR)
HGV I - Heavy Combi (HC)
Then it goes on......
Multi Combi (MC) Road train etc.....

Hubby redid his HGV 1 when he got here (WA).
Theory consisted of being given 20 questions which he had to learn and they asked him 9 of them. Not rocket science and no variations. Just the questions and answers that he was given.
He then had to do an assessment with a driving school and test. Also not rocket science for him. He had been driving large loads in UKfor over 20 years. The driving instructor tried to talk him going straight for his MC but bottled. Now wishes he had taken it after speaking to he drivers at work. MC you have to reverse a short distance in a straight line (no corners involved) and you get 3 attempts.
Pleanty of jobs over here.

In WA the straight line reverse I think is 50 metres with two trailers.
Also, I believe that you can still go from Heavy Rigid to Multi Combo (Roadtrain).
Guess it depends where in Aus you are, but on the whole out of cities most trucks are towing multi trailers.

You could do what I (and 3 other people that I know) did....
Take your normal UK car driving licence into the licensing centre here in Perth and.....wait for it.......
they convert it to a Heavy Goods licence!!
yep - it's that easy!
I haven't bought a truck yet.......but if times get tough....!

Just out of interest, my class 1 should have ran out yesterday, but I payed £80 for a medical to get it renewed for the next 5 years. I have not driven HGV for a few years now, but I thought it would be another string to my bow, for our new venture to QLD soon. If my Air Con. trade lets me down, I can fall back on my Class 1 licence.

We got our visas through another route...nothing to do with my HGV license. Until they make it an in demand skill, you'll have to find another way.
