It's the same... You just need to change plugs... Tip: bring a whole load of extension leads with you so you only need to change their plugs and not everything you have... :)

Just wanted to say hi,

We're moving to hervey bay soon I hope. Hubby has job offer and we hope to arrive in October. Reading this thread I think I'll add to my packing list...long boots, coats, 13 tog duvets. Wasn't expecting to need them.

Any updates on the soccer situation would be great - Hubby and kids 3,5,7 all mad about it and worried re missing it. Also schools, rental housing etc.

Really pleased to see there are some brits there already.

Morning Safin,

My 2 kids attend Urangan High school and Sandy Straits Primary, which is next door. Do you have any idea where you will be renting?
We initially rented in Torquay with a company called Advantage one real estate. Their web site is www.advantageonerealestate.com.au My husband sorted the rental out and said he saw some terrible places!!!!! Decent ones go quick!!!!

Drop me a line if I can help in anyway.

Oh and I dont own a coat or a pair of boots!!!!

no idea where we'll head for. I think we're getting some sort of accomodation for a couple of weeks when we arrive and I guess I'll have to see what's available at that time. Any particularly nice areas/schools or any to avoid?

Out of interest hubby will be working in maryborough. How long does that take? Would it be possible to cycle (he's used to up to 15 miles over here) or is that a joke?

Hi,

All of Hervey Bay is nice!!!!! Not really any "bad" areas.
Maryboro is about a 35 min drive from the Bay. Not really possible to drive.

Other half worked at the Sugar Factory when we first arrived and drove.

Maryborough is about 25-30 minutes drive from Hervey Bay, about 40km,and there is no way you would want to cycle there. The road out from Hervey Bay to the main road is pretty rural and is 100km speed limit. Once on the main feeder into Maryborough, again its mainly single lane each way with some overtaking lanes, however it is again 100km+ road, and quite often the driving is pretty hairy never mind cycling, it is also very busy, for this part of the world. I used to cycle 17miles each way in and out of London, but there is no way I would cycle along a lot of these main roads.

Housing is a lot cheaper in Maryborough, however Hervey Bay is much nicer.

There arent really and good or bad suburbs of Hervey Bay. Its a real mish mash of apartments, new houses and very old houses. There is a lot of new housing going up in and around town, and out at Dundowran and Craignish. Living out there would add another 10-15 mins to your Maryborough commute, so I would look in town.

Have a look at realestate.com for an idea of whats out there. We moved from Mackay and found a beautiful rental 3 bed house in a day, just need to traipse round the realestates. However doing your research on realestate before hand and knowing which realestates have what your looking for, really helps.

Schools I cant help you with however!

Re: Hervey Bay

Mackay is a funny town due to the mining boom, the accommodation shortage and high prices are a massive issue and anyone heading there needs to be fully aware of just how bad it is. When we arrived it took us over 6 weeks to find a rental, even though I had a job from day 1 we arrived. The mentality and reception we got from the real estates was disgusting to be honest. It was a town we never gelled with and never felt comfortable in. For a smallish town it has a lot of issues.

We also felt very isolated there, in terms of getting to a city means getting on a plane pretty much. We had other issues too, like my job didnt turn out the way it should have done. That said I met some great people there, and made great friends, just wasnt for us.

Hervey Bay however is a different story, as you know beautiful beaches, easy to hop in the car and head to Bris etc. When we first arrived in Hervey Bay it reminded me of a small English seaside town still somewhere in the 70s! We love it :) We took a risk on getting work, although Stella had already got a job, I hadnt, but sometimes taking a risk means things work out, and they have! New we have a house, a cat, and a great quality of life, that we would never had even contemplated in the UK.

Re: Hervey Bay

I've lived in Australia since 1964.

My mum and dad moved to Hervey Bay in 1974 and the first time we came for a visit from Armidale in NSW I fell in love with the place. Back then there was no supermarket and not much more than a dirt road from the Bay to Maryborough. We moved here in 1986 and it was the best move we ever made. No, that's not quite right, we moved out to Booral, which is about 10 minutes drive from Urangan three and a half years, that's the best, and hopefully, the last move we will make.

I've seen it grow over the years and maybe not all for the better.

The fishing's great the beaches are great, the whales are brilliant and Fraser Island is the biggest sand Island in the world and beautiful.

In all the time we have been here this is the coldest winter I can remember, my little gas heater worked overtime for a while a couple of weeks back.

It does get hot in the summer and around January/February it gets humid which is something I thought I would never get used to but it's suprising how the human body adapts.

The schools are as good here as they are anywhere else and there are plenty of childcare centers. We also have a Uni campus and a TAFE.

The main economy is tourism and building.

i have been in HB for 2 years now and it is the perfect place to bring up children. My experience is that whilst it still has a country feel to it it really is moving ahead and whilst jobs are not as plentiful as they might be this is bound to change with new malls, construction, resorts etc on the go all the time.Crime is not a great problem, few matcho punch ups at the Torquay and the Beach House most weekends but its fairly innocent stuff, just the locals having a bit of fun!!! nightlife tends to end early especially during the week and the only club in town called Seven is probably not going to excite anyone. However the beaches, eateries, fishing ,watersports etc make this town a pleasure to live in.The only problem I have is that i dont really feel the need to go on holiday, every day feels like one.People are friendly, the sun shines most of the time and a few cold weeks in the winter is almost enjoyable .Sydney is 1.5 hours away by plane with flights every day and its cheap too,as for traffic, well any pom will laugh at what the locals think of as a traffic jam.As a friend of mine oncw said"who would want to live anywhere else"!

my name is actually Mike,my boys are matt and Jamie hence the handle.new mall at eli waters has just opened and I believe Bay Centro is just in the process of getting a planned extension to its retail outlets approved. As the town continues to grow more and more of the big stores will arrive which will drive the development of more retail outlets.I was told that 42 billion of development projects were on the table for the bay which sounds an awful lot but as it came from the head of tourism for HB I have no reason to doubt its validity.

Re: Hervey Bay

42 billion??? and there i am coming along with a few bob... lol.
Sorry for the name mike!!!, simple mistake.
I'm looking to arrive late next yr, if i can get the business sold here on time.
When i was there yrs ago, i loved everything about it. I'll be 30 when we arrive, and gf 25, both without kids, but wanna start on them as soon as were settled in there. So hopefully according to everyone else, this is the right choice for us then.
I just can't wait till i buy a boat, and can go fishing every weekend!!!!
Should call it Paradise Bay!!!!! That what we'll be living in!
