The helping people out thing sounds really nice. We are looking for a 4 bedroom house when we get to Perth so we can do the same sort of thing. We really only need 3 but seeing how our families will probably not (read never) come over to see us, we thought how maybe we could use the 4th bedroom to have the new friends we met here on BE stay with us for a few days till they get sorted when they first arrive.

Like i said, all i want to do is remind people how hard it was for us, i didnt know about centrelink, where medicare was, i was ill.
Awas a real bnm. And i know you lot are great, i just read a couple of threads this morning and the phrase that got to me was "feeling LOST". I remember that well. I t makes me feel really sad.
And i will remember you lot when we come over that way, we have somewhere to stay.
And for those in MELBOURNE, my daughter is coming over in 3 weeks, a bit of an adventure, she is lovely, great with kids, so if you need any babysitting.
And i might be calling on you for some help. But i hope not. Just a worried mum.
Have a great day
Denise, off to work now

Re: helping each other

We would gladly offer any help needed by new expats. We've been in Perth since March (in Hillarys) and have found that when we arrived the people who wanted to help us initially were other expats. In fairness, there are a LOT of expats in Hillarys :p . When we arrived we had to buy a load of household stuff while we waited for our container ie. iron, ironing board, toaster, bedding etc. Now that our stuff has arrived we have a lot of doublers so if it helps save anyone money while they wait for their own belongings we thought we could repeatedly lend these out to newbies. I don't work and would be delighted to drive any families around until they have their own transport. We have room for people to come and stay too, although they would have to be dog friendly as we have 2 mad cocker spaniels. In addition, if anyone finds themselves without a pc, whether job searching/househunting or general BE surfing :) we have broadband and a spare laptop. Come along, have a coffee and I promise not to annoy you lol! You can't underestimate the joy of finding a friendly face when you don't know a soul. Feel free to pm me if I can be of any help (this is a genuine offer).
Tracey

Yeah, I realised that :) Are there any BE members in the area where you are? I have to say that I find its the Aussies with European connctions that are the most sociable of the locals here (Brissie) - I've found that, besides people from the site, the best friends I have now got are of Irish or English extraction, that came here at a very young age, or that are very proiud of their English connections - all of which I have found out after striking up friendships.

We could start a "contact" list if you want. Members who wanted to be availabe to newbies arriving in Australia could pm me there details like name and location and we could add them to the list. Then when anyone needed someone to show them the ropes they could look at the list and pm the member nearest them. How does that sound?

Sorry to hear about this Lynn. We are a Kiwi/Singaporean/Malaysian/Pommy family and would like too think we do go out of our way to help others.

With a young toddler and lack of family around while in the UK we greatly appreciate the need to help others because you never know when you may need their help in return.

PS Where have you recently arrived?
