hi katie,
(sorry i'm assuming that's your name) there are a lot of us on here who are hoping to go to live in nz and many who have gone already. maybe if you have a look at the thread where to live around christchurch -it will give you an idea of some of the folk who are heading (hopefully) that direction.
christchurch would seem to be a fairly popular choice for families with young children and it is ours too although it seems to be a degree or 2 cooler than the north island particularly in winter. for a lot of people it maybe comes down to where they are likely to get work.
it is maybe easiest to find out about the main centres of population by searching for them on the search facility in the forum as there has been much discussion on most of them in the past. also keep posting your own questions and following every one else's - i have found it invaluable so far. there are also several who have already "made it" and they are very good at passing on what they have learnt to the rest of us just starting out. i'm sure some of them will be able to help you more than i can.
i'll just tell you about a website i have found particularly encouraging. it is www.emigratenz.org it is written i think from a more british perspective and there are lots of good articles on there.
anyway welcome to the forum and all the best with your decision making
