Max, The Bloke says because its only cold for six or seven weeks of the year, so they don't think its worth it. I guess there is a little bit of logic in there somewhere, but I think it would still be worth having something! The houses - certainly here - are so thinly built that any heat there is goes stright out through the gaps and the thin walls. And Michelle is right there, they do seem incapable of closing doors and windows in winter (don't jump on me, I know I'm generalising. Yesterday all the windows were wide opne, plus both doors - which creates a draught right through the house. Meanwhile, Mr Aussie Bloke sits here in a thick fleece, zipped up to the neck, but refusing to shut the doors!

We have one of those louvre windows in the bathroom, you actually can'tclose it at all. The Bloke jams a bit of wood over it in the winter, not brilliant but it means the bathroom now isn't quite as cold as the garden! Bit dark in there though!!

Michelle, did you also find this thing about keeping all the curtains closed all day in case daylight gets in and fades the furniture?(God forbid!!). As a result you spend all day in darkness or in aritificial light!

I'm glad my house was't the only one that couldn't see the logic in - if you're cold shut the doors and windows!

Yes, curtains were often left shut all day and with it still often being bright outside, I used to constantly find my eyes readjusting to the light. I hate artificial light as well, it definitely has a different glow about it.

Well, thats it Polly I think we need a Winter campaign to shut windows and open curtains - I always get told that I'm a pom and should be good with winter weather, about time we share some of our 'innate knowledge'

Its so odd, I really dislike sitting in the dark with all the curtains shut, when you know its a lovely sunny day outside. I shall end up with S A D, which i never seemed to suffer from in the UK! It is hard on the eyes too isn't it, constantly adjusting as you go in and out. Artificial light just isn't the same - and it seems so daft, turning a light on instead of opening the curtains! The Queensland attitude to it is if the sun gets into your house for even a short time all your furniture will fade and have to be replaced......and this is in houses where the sun doesn't shine in directly, opening the curtains would just make the house lighter!Nearly as good as their theory about summer time - if you change the clocks the cows will get confused and won't give any milk.

I shall join you in your campaign Michelle!Re-educate them before we all get Seaasonally Affected Disorder!

People moan about the weather in Melbourne but this is the cooldest month of the year and I can still go out and about with just m fleece on. The overnight temp last night was 10 degrees and 14 to 15 during the day. It can feel chilly when the sun is hidden by the clouds but last night we went out and I didnt need my coat.
My family and I still have days out in mid winter here. The weather suits us very much here. Ofcourse don't forget it does get to rain here and we have had quite a bit lately. this is good as we are having a prolonged drought and water shortage situation here.

Cheers
booboo

Michelle, that is SOOOOO funny - as I get exactly the same result when I say things like that to The Bloke!
"You whinging again"
""If I open the curtains the TV will fade (!!!), so don't keep having a go at me for shutting them.
"Got to open all the windows to let the fresh air in, having a go at me for that now are you"

The latest thing is not getting in the car till the engine and air con have been running for at least 10 minutes.....
Him"why do you stay in the house so long?"
Me "Cos I can't see the point of standing in the street next to a car with the engine running, when I'm not allowed to get into it!"
Him "Well, it has to be cooled down first".
ARGGHHHH!!!!!

He asked me the other day why I left the food on the worktop instead of putting it straight into the fridge - I said with all the windows open the kitchen is actually colder than the fridge!

You're right, we could have our work cut out here!

RAOTFLMAO!!!

Shane took it totally personally as well - he told me that 'air is a better insulator than most other things and it was good to have it coming in'. I had to point out to him when the air was cold it didn't matter how good an insulator it was it was still going to be cold!!! For an intelligent man, he ain't half stupid sometimes

For sure, why would you want to sit a stinking hot car thats not going anywhere for ten minutes... that'd be as strange leaving your windows open in the winter and complaining you're cold. AAggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Oh & one more question - the TV will fade?? HUH?!!!! :lecture:
