heath undertaking
I have noticed that some people state they have had to sign a health undertaking.
Anyone know what this is for and why.........

If you have a health problem which needs follow up you have to agree to do it in Australia.
Usually your time to then validate your visa is reduced from one year to 6 months.
I have posted this a few times for those wanting to send medicals etc. before they are requested.
I think this is right .If I am wrong then no doubt someone will correct me.

Can also be requested if you may have been in contact with TB etc i.e. medical profession.
It does drop the validation time to 6 months which can be a right sod! We came out to validate and called the health dept (you can only call from within the country) only to be told "Don't worry about it, give us a call when you settle permanently".
One other point make sure the doc understands that x-rays are free to those doing a health undertaking. Took a little effort with ours even though there was a memo to that effect on the wall!

I think this will apply for more serious conditions not those which are under control.
I suppose it is down to the panel in Australia.
I do not think common conditions will require an undertaking but I am no expert.

Then I realise I'm being irrational, & remind myself that I'm not in too bad shape: eg good clear lungs (peak flow readings of 450-480 each day), very fit, had min. time off with flu etc this winter (when all my colleagues have been having 3+ weeks, apart from the smokers who are off for about 1 day ). The fact that we're all worrying about it is strangely comforting, though....
Hope DIMIA don't decide to fail people for being hypochondriacs!

Yes, me too. I keep waking at 3am with my heart pounding, thinking, 'I'm asthmatic, overweight & my BP @ medical was 140/80, they'll never let me in' !

Terrible, isn't it???!!!
I have two conditions - asthma and an underactive thyroid, which makes me doubly worried.
But then I'm only 26, neither stop me from working or leading a normal life and both are can be controlled quite easily. Everything else is in decent working order, I do a lot of exercise and don't smoke or drink (well, hardly - a couple of glasses a month maybe).
