Default Health care

Hello

Whats the deal with health care in Oz? Is it expensive? What happens if you get some kind of cancer if you are not on really high wages? Is medical insurance very expensive out there?

Thanks

Health care is done by medicare here you get :

Free treatment at a public hospital

Free or subsidised treatment by doctors and specialists.

To qualify you must be a permantent residence or australia citizen although if you get a working holiday visa you can get a recipricol card which just means the bills go back to the uk goverment.

If you go to a hospital and are checked in as a public patient you wont have the choice of which doctors treat you but you wont be charged.

If your a private patient medicare will pay 75 percent of the bill and the rest is picked up by the private company you are with, if they cover it all, you will get a choice of doctors.

All this info is straight from the medicare leaflet i have in front of me, as I just joined a couple of days ago myself

Hello you can also use the UK agreement and get a medicare card if you are on a sponsored 457 visa.

We are here on 457 and went in and got medicare card for whole family. Also told us we were entitled to PBS ( cheaper prescription meds scheme). I asked them as have kids with medical conditions and she went and double checked for me to confirm.

Hi Gems

To save me search hundreds of threads - can you confirm what the UK agreement is and how you do this. I have heard very limited info on this, so any help would be great.
Thanks
John
