If thats the new Age, I'll stick to the old one.
New Age travellers are just as likely to be highly-educated and lead a lifestyle that does not involve any crime (...but not sure if they tresspass). |
Re: Gypsies ????????
in my experience solo or small families of gyspies are tidy and genuine. I always go to the same lot to get my knives sharpened when I see them!
Large groups of pikeys/tinkers/Irish travvellers cannot be trusted and generally make a big mess, cause damage, trespass and upset locals. Oddly enough crime figures rise sharply too. NATS also make a mess, cause damage and trespass, but think it's okay because they are protesting about GM crops or some such. I am pretty sure we will find all of these people in Oz, but probbaly variations on a theme! ;) |

Ergo, Roma ≠"gypsies." It's a common misconception. In my experience, when UK people speak of "gypsies", they usually mean Irish travellers (also known as "Irish gypsies" or "pikies") though the term often embraces Scottish travellers as well. Hence my reply to the OP. The Roma are a different group entirely, and not all Roma are peripatetics (another common misconception) nor are all peripatetics gypsies (yet another common misconception). Thus, for example, the Saami people of Finland and Sweden, the Samoyed of Siberia, and the Mali of the Western Sahara) - all of whom are peripatetics, but not gypsies. And in case you're wondering - I took an Anthropology unit at university which covered all of this, and more. It was led by a British professor who had spent several months living with a group of Irish travellers in the UK. And that is exactly why i didnt call them gypsies! We have some gypsy friends and they are very nice but are constantly defending themselves!!! |
Re: Gypsies ????????
Here's a spooky thing for me - I am quite superstitious and when I was in Blackpool on Friday for some bizarre reason we were standing on the street waiting for one of us to come back from the cashpoint and we were talking about gypsies - I was saying how when I used to work in the city (Birmingham) I was always getting them stopping me in the street to get me to buy lucky heather or tell my fortune and my friend used to shout at them and drag me away before I put my hand in my pocket. I was saying ooh bet I'm cursed now - lo and behold right at that very moment a bloody gypsy grabs my arm and shoves some lucky heather in my face!
That was very spooky! Well I thought so anyway :D |

Back in the UK I worked for a police force that had a lot of trouble with travellers - I also knew some personally. Some of those were quite highly educated too, but it didn't stop them from being thieving scum. |
Re: Gypsies ????????
Funny how, when I go to take a report off some old dear that's been burgled by her nice friendly builders, they are always described as "nice Irish boys"!
Crime goes through the roof when the pikies turn up in town. There is a permanent site just outside Pompey where its really not a good idea for a lone copper to go. In fact, if you're planning on nicking one of them you'd best take armed support! Good honest travelling folk! |

Certainly glad Oz doesn't have the same problem. Its kind of easier to accept trouble makers that live in an area rather than those that turn up en masse and cause mayhem every few months. |
Re: Gypsies ????????
Probably going off at a bit of a tangent here, but a few years ago, Viz comic ran a strip called "The Thieving Gypsy B*stards". It was actually very funny because it depicted the bad thieving type very accurately and most of us have probably had experience of them in some way or another. Anyway, the following month they had to print an apology together with a promise that the cartoon would not be repeated, because a lot of the pikeys complained about it as they were regular readers of Viz! Shame.

My neighbours are travellers or peria-something or other.
Every winter they get in a nice campervan with all the mods including a kitchen made out of MDF and f**k off to Queensland. Except this year it pissed down and we had better weather here. Apparently. |
