In my experience, when UK people speak of "gypsies", they usually mean Irish travellers (also known as "Irish gypsies" or "pikies") though the term often embraces Scottish travellers as well. Hence my reply to the OP.

The Roma are a different group entirely, and not all Roma are peripatetics (another common misconception) nor are all peripatetics gypsies (yet another common misconception).

Thus, for example, the Saami people of Finland and Sweden, the Samoyed of Siberia, and the Mali of the Western Sahara) - all of whom are peripatetics, but not gypsies.

And in case you're wondering - I took an Anthropology unit at university which covered all of this, and more. It was led by a British professor who had spent several months living with a group of Irish travellers in the UK.
