Re: Gympie

Our rental place in Gympie is a bloody gold mine (pardon the pun) it rents for nearly as much as the place in Forest Lake and cost a fraction of the price.

Whenever I go up there it always seems an OK place to me. Most of the in laws live up there so we try to get there once a month or so.

All that wisdom based on a 5 minutes driving through on the highway. Or never having visited at all.:(:(:(

Now thats a bit unfair Sean! Some of them must have stopped at McDonalds!

A lot of my friends came up from Brisbane for the weekend and socialised with the locals but nobody said anything bad about Gympie, either that or they didn't know which one of my heads to talk to!

Well I have only driven through but we were expecting some run down dust bowl of a town. It's actually looks quite pretty and well kept from what we saw. It was also the first place, despite driving all day through countryside that we saw wild kangaroos (in the middle of town drinking from a creek at a sport's field) so it has a place in our affections. I have no idea what it's like to live or work there though.

Most of these places that are a bit out of the way of the major centres have cheaper housing and it doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with the place.

That might have been our kids school. Its on the highway and they have wild kangaroos on the oval. On sports day the kids were running around the track and the kangaroos were lying under the tree watching them. Our kids were amazed when they first went to the school, now they dont even notice them.

Spent more than 5 minutes driving through there to form a judgement.

Despite the media stereotyping, Gympie's problems are probably no better or worse than many other small (when compared to cities) rural communities.

It's probably a historical love/hate thing in that Gympie saved the QLD Govt from bankruptcy way back and then the gold production stopped.

Don't knock it till you've tried it. Think large country village 1970's and you probably wouldn't be too far off the mark, it still has a steam railway line:rofl::rofl:
We've been up this way for nearly 5 years. If your not looking for the beach life style (Tincan Bay 40mins, Hervey Bay 1hr) and don't need the infrastructure of a major city for employment, then give it a try you might find it pleasantly surprising. It takes some time to get used to visiting the bank and being called by your name and strangers passing the time of day with you.
I had a conversation some years ago now with a "lady" who when I mentioned that we lived near Gympie had some very uncomplimentary things to say. I simply told we picked the ferallist place we could find and built a house there, and as she had obviously never visited then she should not judge.
The crime rate here is relatively low, we can go to work and leave our house unlocked and the cars are always unlocked under the house. Our work ute recently had problems with it's radiator whilst it was being fixed we had and made use of several offers of vehicles so that we could get to work.
We have wallabies in the garden hundreds of rainbow lorikeet's, king parrots, galah's the variety of birds is amazing we also have possums which we hand feed.
Don't get me wrong it's not utopia, but it's close enough for us, for now:huh:
