Back in my early years here, Queens Birthday weeked was the traditional night for fireworks and it was called Cracker Night (not Bonfire Night). Because Queens Birthday is in June (early winter) it kind-of resembled Guy Fawkes night. No guys, though and definitely not on the 5th November.
Since NSW banned fireworks in the 1980's there haven't even been Cracker Nights. Don't know where in Australia they have Bonfire Nights - certainly not in NSW. Maybe it's an obscure Tasmanian tradition...

Yep, I used to celebrate it when I lived in Tassie - though I think we did it in October rather than November. And some people called it Cracker Night, while others called it Bonfire night.![Smile](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Late 1960's :I used to celebrate it too in Northern Victoria in the Ovens Valley, near Bright. I can recall a bon-fire and sparklers, but no actual fireworks. 'Course, I was a toddler back then so was more interested in the toffee apples on supply.
From Wikipedia enclypopedia: "In Australia, Guy Fawkes Night (commonly called "cracker night" or "bon-fire night" as a reference to the use of fireworks) was widely celebrated until the 1960s, but has now almost completely died out. This is partly because state governments banned the commercial sale of fireworks in the 1970s due to their misuse (many people used them to blow up letterboxes and other appliances causing injury to others), and partly because of growing disapproval of the anti-Catholic connotations of the night."
Personally, I feel that blowing up King James (1 & VI) would have done the world a favour especially when one considers his preference for little boys as oppossed to Anne of Denmark.
