I would be amazed if this goes ahead. Ireland has done this as far as I know, but post crash.

They introduced a sales tax in NSW last year and it doesn't seem to have brought out the pitchforks. The important thing would be to make small changes.

Thumbs up Re: The Great Australian Property Swindle

Scrap the FHOG. I don't want to keep paying for Howard's handouts for the rest of my life.

ah fair enough.
It's a tradeoff I guess between how much location wins over price.

800k+ for a place in the SE suburbs
Vs
320k approx for a 4Bed House and Land package in one of the new big developments.

A no brainer on paper, but quite understandable how it is much harder in practice to uproot and move location to get an affordable house when your heart/mind is already settled somewhere else

Hope you catch a break down the line Margaret !

I'd phase it out rather than scrap it. Drop it by $500 a year until it's gone.

I remember what happened in the UK when they got rid of double mortgage relief in the late 80s. It wasn't pretty.

800 k, would get you a damn good place in GW or round about, am hoping to eventually get summit around 420, dont care how small, (just want it to be liveable!, not some flee infested 70's pad!)

whaaa ??? I thought the median unit price for Glen Waverley was about the 500k mark ?

420 would be a super duper deal for certain. Grab that for sure !
