Oh just wanted to see if it exists as I say.

Nic is once again out of work. She walked out ... no, I told her to leave!! ... as her health is more important. The company had bought her to tears and anyone who knows her will know she isn't a tearful person, so she / we don't need that so she is once again unemployed.

We're giving the Gold Coast one more year and if she aint got a half decent job we'll move state.

LOVELY place to live the Goldie, but the work ethic stinks big time, and the closer you get to admin, the more it smells like a dead dog!

It baffles me how someone with years of experience in admin. Worked in the head offices of big UK co's, held down jobs for 5 / 6 years can get soooooooooo many knock backs with job she applies for here here, and when she finally gets a job ... is expected to put up with some REAL crap!

The funny thing is, we used study to get us into the country. We used to worry what I was gonna do for a living after it all. We kinda knew (huh!!!!) with all Nic's experience she'll have no prob's finding work, but I'll just have to see how it goes.

The irony of it all is I'VE secured a decent job with good prospects etc etc ... am VERY happy there and all the rest, but poor Nic has gone thru more jobs here than I think she ever had in the UK! ... and as I say is ONCE AGAIN out of work and stuck to the PC / SEEK etc

She doesn't want a 'top job' ... she doesn't want a 'cushty job' ... she doesn't want an 'easy ride' ... or anything like that ... she simply wants a full time permanent job in the field of admin! ... is it REALLY that hard here???????????????

A job where she won't be doing 1.5 persons work! A job where if you take your full (as the contact says) hours lunch ... people say "oooh no, they don't like you to take more than half hour!" ... A job where if you work over your finish time you actually get paid for it! ... it's not simply expected and to be done for free! ... Or even a job where she isn't stood over by her boss and told to "shut her mouth" because when getting the blame for someone else's cockup ... and simply states it wasn't HER doing ... she get's that from the boss! ... :curse:

Bullshit.

One more year!

Hey, is she working with my boss?

Paul I can see why Nic is pissed off but I would urge you to consider moving states.

Reason being is that you waited and nearly broke your own spirit waiting for your job, which for you is the perfect job, with enough money and prospects to see you through as it supports you and your family.

If you sacrafice that to move states so that Nic can find a decent admin job, the tables could be turned on on you in the fact that you might not be able to find such a good job that is well paid with the same prospects and Nics admin job won't be able to match it in any aspect as in prospects, training and finances.

That is not saying that Nic isnt as important because of course she is but to sacrafice good career prospects, good money, and your happiness as the primary provider (at the moment) to move interstate for an admin job that Nic doesnt yet have is too huge a gamble in my opinion.

Now back to Nics admin work, I know how she feels and that is all I am saying.

What is the answer? If I were Nic I would retrain, I would find something I could enjoy, something I would make money out of and retrain in that area and give something else a go - something that will enable her skills to be valued.

Just be careful about giving up your ideal job, moving states where you will both be unemployed and in an extremely fragile position, when the answer could be for Nic to retrain in another area and you keep the job that you like.

I know its hard, I cant say too much but I can sympathise with Nic and lets just say that work ethic is not limited to the Gold Coast.

Not sure why you'd need to move states if you love living where you are? Why can't nic just get an admin job in the Brisbane area for the time being ? The commute might be a pain, but beggars can't be choosers. Best of luck.

To be honest Sam we simply couldn't afford for her to retrain ... but then why if admin is her field. I've asked her to retrain for something in demand here as from what I see that's how you get by. If you do sommit that is very general then you get general wages (award) and bullshit chances with jobs!

Good call, but tried this. She spent 12 weeks recently driving to Brissie airport (could be 1.5 hours to get there) as she threw the towel with chances of anything decent of the Gold Coast.

So yeah, started a job she was promised by recruitment co was a 40 hour week for X pay. She starts and is told the job is only 25 hours pw, and the pay is obv lower too! ... not what she signed up for, but as she was promised she'll go full time in January, so plods on with it. Then December comes and is told that the job is gonna stay 25 hours and like it or lump it basically.

She was doin $100 pw in tolls and fuel for 3/4 of the hours / wage she wants / needs so needless to say she left the company.

For over 2 years Nic had a 20 hour pw work restriction on her cos we was on a student visa. In May last year she was given full working rights, plus a PR status (something that has hindered in the past) but in 8 months she's STILL in the same boat ... looking for a job!

We're pretty modest people, we don't want a lot from life, we get by on the basics. It's just one of them 'basics' is a full time job, and it just aint happening for the poor girl! ... :curse:

This just seems to be the attitude in the Australian workplace, I have had the same situation, but i bit back ,that seemed to shut them up.
Australians employers seem to have a really strange workplace mentality, somewhat akin to the UK about 30 years ago.

I agree, and so does Nic. Funny thing is she 'bit back' in prev job and was told she was a trouble maker! She's not, but IS a person who won't normally take crap and WILL tell someone what for, but to be honest with all the work agg over the last few years here she's unfortunately had about just enough of it all now.

With Nic's last job where she did bite back as I say. She was escorted off the premises after! ...

Oh I dunno, son can't get a job. Daughter is half happy, but doesn't like being forced to do 10/12 hour shifts without a break! (bar work, trust me it's true), and Nic back unemployed!

1 out of 4 aint bad I spose ...

Well Paul, maybe a move wouldn't be a bad thing for you all. But I would wait until you have finished your training (I'm sorry I don't really remember what you are doing and how long it will take) - or see if you can transfer your training elsewhere.

You need to weigh up all options, and then maybe research a possible move. One thing I do know, you are all fighters and whatever happens you will get through it.

If I can help at all, you know how to contact me.

Sorry work wise it's all a bit pearshaped mate. It was all looking quite positive there for a while. Has she looked in Brissie CBD and getting the train in? I know we've discussed it but can't remember Temp work there perhaps?

If you are considering moving states, have you any ideas which one?

You know it's crazy to hear myself say we'll move state as we DO love it here. Ok, no utopia and there's probs like anywhere, but I've always said the Gold Coast ticks all our boxes easy and apart from the obv we have no drama's really.

As to me, well I don't really have any training as am out on my own now. I was thrown into the deep end but am treading water and will be able to do front crawl by the end of the month ... ... but seriously It'll take at least another year before I'll be in a possission to go for a job and say I can 'do the job' with as good as 100% confidence really. So I pretty much have to stay put for my best chance of a decent enough career.

1 full time job in admin and we're sorted!

Can't be THAT hard surely? ... well time will tell I guess.

She's looking for work in the CBD, has been an area of choice for a while. Ok, south Brissie is obv better, but you know she's that desperate if it was back up at the airport, and 35+ hours I know she'd do it. I thought she was mad, but the possible 90 min journey to work didn't bother her, but financially it just wasn't worth it for 25 hours!

As to another state. Well I / we obv hope it doesn't come to that, but I know we'd rather go to another state than back to blighty so who knows, wherever admin jobs are plentiful I guess.

Took me a good 6 months to get something, and there's lots of Admin work in the city here - I have to drive about 25km's to get there, won't go any further than that.

Nic seems to have gone through a similar situation as myself. Only difference is that I haven't left yet

I am thinking about re-training but like you said, it all costs money. I got sick and tired of contacting the agencies, going to some of them is like being fed to the wolves!

Out of the 4 friends whom I have met since arriving, we have all had problems with getting admin jobs. They just ain't there. It really makes you question your skills and your confidence really takes a dive.

I thought great, found a job at last - turned out to be the worse job for the worse boss that I have ever worked for. The work ethics here are just shocking, they think they can treat you how they like and that you will stand for it.

I am still there but only because I know how long it took me to get a job in the first place. Not hold much hope of find a new job anytime soon either.

Hey if ever she want to have a moan over a coffee just let me know.

Anywhere within an hours drive will do. So that's an admin job, within an hours drive!

Easy? ...

Yes I too hear the agencies leave a lot to be desired for. I say to Nic "what about that blah blah job you applied for?" ... and she'll tell me that she phones them, leaves messages, and never gets a return call! ... so just forgets about that one.

'Question your skills and confidence?' ... the poor girls confidence has been shot to pieces work wise here, I don't think it could be lower at the mo ...

Still, onwards and up is the way eh! ...
