When you say flat screen TVs do you mean LCD style flat panel TVs or do you mean CRT TVs which have the 'flat' front screen? Just interested as we will also be down to the goodguys buying TVs and other stuff.
Good tip about the bank card - just out of interest. Any idea what the upper limit is for a typical UK bank card / credit card, when being used abroad?
Cheers

Not sure on the UK credit card or wether it would be cost effective to use it - we had to use ours for the hire car at the airport though.

If you like fast food there are about 20 places to eat it's quite shocking - someone must be eating all that junk! There is a massive Bunnings like B & Q so thats handy - there is just about everything here down the road.

Interested in what you had to say about the empty houses situation...did you mean in Merriwa.
Interested in any info you have as we are intending to buy 2 houses 1 for living and 1 to rent, which is what I assume you are doing...Is it easy enough to keep propertys rented out...bit worrying that you say loads empty...

There are not enough good rentals here - they rent in a day if they are clean and tidy. There are a few for sale that are empty as the sellers have been renting them out and now need that cash for something else etc. The goverment run these negative gearing tax breaks because they haven't built enough council properties apparently so they do this do ease a rental shortage. They stopped it for a couple of years but brought it back.
It's exactly what we are doing - in fact just put an offer in on one where the sellers want to stay put while they build so thats convenient - should be a good 12 month lease that one! You can write so much off against the investment property it pays for itself you just have to set some money aside for the shortfall in the meantime for the first year. Actually just bought a good book today on the subject you can even pay off next years interest if you have a liability you want to use up in the current finanicial year. We have a positively geared property which we will get taxed on but if we run some negatively geared ones hopefully we can offset it. Don't know nearly as much as I should do on the subject but will fill you in. Seeing an accountant this week.

One thing we hadn't realised is that we can only spend $1000 per day on our bank card - not really convenient and to my mind the banks way of ensuring you get a credit card. Really can't see how you could live here without one very easily.

That aside, glad you are enjoying Perth. We've been here nearly 6 months now and still have the '"wow we live here" moments at least 2x a week.
Hope you continue to settle in as well as you have so far.

Yeah believe me spending that much wont be a regular occurance! At the moment having to spend so much on things we didn't or couldn't bring and had to get another sofa - bit embarressing at Ikea when I got to the till and couldn't pay for what I'd bought.
What I couldn't believe was the folks behind me in the queue - imagine in the UK holding up the queue by being such a div what looks and under the breath comments you would get - not here they all said how it was a crap banking system and cooed over my little girl. Can't believe it's six months already for you - hope to meet up with you guys.

I just can't wait now.
Will look up the schools.
Was on Delgado drive 2 weeks ago - driving around looking for blocks - wish I'd contacted people sooner I could have popped in for a cuppa !!
Stayed at Joondalup Resort Hotel - can see a very big difference to coast side 'v' suburb side of Marmion - do I go with first instinct, pay more and go coast side.
Everyone on this forum is so helpful.
2 more questions if you would'nt mind
1. Recommend a shipper from Glos - Perth
2. Has anyone moved a dog ? Big soft Goldie.
Hope to join you all soon for a barbie

Can't reccommend my shippers - Armishaws- shame cause they are west country based but don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to international removals imho. Anglo pacific actually shipped it - lost a box. Keep realising we are missing things!
Try Golden Arrow for the dog. They know their stuff - wish I had used them mine also stuffed that up and our poor cats are still in the UK till next weekend.
Know what you mean about other side of Marmion, but did accidently drive into Currambine today and thought that looked lovely. You know what they say - pay as much as you can afford and you will make more in the long run.
Keep in touch there will be a few of us in Iluka or there abouts! It will be like neighbours. In fact 3 people I have met this week - all Australian live there too. So the clap trap about it just being wall to wall poms seems another myth.
If we ever get the barbie back you are more than welcome - still in quarantine.
Highly reccomend to anyone thinking of bringing a bloody great thing like that not to bother - they are cheap as you like out here - now we have to pay to get it cleaned...I only spent 3 hours cleaning the damn thing before it was shipped!

We bought a house before we got here so the account was opened up for us automatically. We had already opened one with the Commonwealth - not to be reccommend unless you like dealing with dimwits. When we wanted to close the account it took 4 days to get the money out of them too.
Hope this helps.
