Hi everyone,
Been living here two weeks now. Don't give a stuff what drivel has been on here about Perth - it's fantastic, the people are lovely, it's relaxed and life is a lot more enjoyable. It is hard for me to understand the posts on here describing it as dull & boring - too many things to do wouldn't know where to start.
We originally planned to stay in Subiacio for 3 weeks but on arrival it hadn't been cleaned - even this wasn't enough to piss me off and thats very strange! We stayed there for a week as it was great to be so central and to get our feel of the city before we moved out into the suburbs.
When I told the owner we wouldn't be staying she was so lovely it made me feel really bad. It turned out that the cleaner had been ill and not told her.
Anyway as you know we already bought a place in Iluka before we came out all the doom and gloom merchants who advised against buying as a crash was looming - glad we ignored you! (no disrespect intended). The house has gone up in value to an extent that we hadn't expected in a million years.
Well we are still leasing that one out to the builders till at least May so we have bought another one in Merriwa - funny place but the streets nice. Apparently it's the place to buy investment properties. Walked in off the street as it was an open home and it was empty so asked the agent if we could move in immediately and rent it. So that's what we have done for $100 a week. (saw loads that were empty too if that is anyones idea). It's a little odd living in an area where you have no intention of staying but it's so near to everything up here. Anyway so that's where we are - I am up to my eyes in Paint as the whole place has been done in suede effect red, blue and orange - migrane recipe.
Lots of things seem quite old fashioned and some seem so much better than home.
Not having a great deal of luck on the kindergarton front - the one we wanted has a years waiting list! But loads and loads of things to do for kids and called the department of education and they were so bloody helpful like everyone here it's so refreshing.
Visited good old Ikea a few times - it's so dinky like a teeny version of the UK but has everything you need.
On the shipping front our TV was smashed. Bought 2 flat screen TV's here for £400 in 'Good Guys'..yes thats £400! The insurance assessors are coming Friday - that's service for you. Take your insurance out with Letton Percival - they are cheap and really quick to sort things out.
One thing we hadn't realised is that we can only spend $1000 per day on our bank card - not really convenient and to my mind the banks way of ensuring you get a credit card. Really can't see how you could live here without one very easily. Have to say the National bank are really great too - we have a personal banker who deals with everything for us - would reccommend them.
Had a pay as you go mobile here but it was pricey so now signed up for one $25 a month.
LOVE IT..and life would be perfect if only someone could send me a packet of Richmond sausages.....mmmmmmm

Great to hear you are having such a fab time and are happy(partly cos its what I want to hear as we are intending to head to Perth)
Interested in what you had to say about the empty houses situation...did you mean in Merriwa.
Interested in any info you have as we are intending to buy 2 houses 1 for living and 1 to rent, which is what I assume you are doing...Is it easy enough to keep propertys rented out...bit worrying that you say loads empty...

Hi Sandra,
Sounds like you are settling in really well. I know Jill and I couldn't understand the gloom merchants out there who slated Perth ! Jill is clearly having a ball and Imogen is doing great. She is also struggling to scratch the surface but theres plenty of time yet.
Hope it continues to be so good for you. I'm sure you'll pop up at one of the Perth bashes at some point and we can finally meet properly !!
Best wishes

Thats good to hear.
We are heading to Perth too. Can't wait.
Hubby going over in Jan, to find a job - chef. I'll follow with son in Feb - or sooner if our house here sells quickly.
We have been looking at Iluka. Prices have shot up since I was there last yr.
Would like to get son into Beaumaris primary and rent somewhere close for a while, probably buy a block and build - but they are up to $300,000 now.
What would you guys already there advise ?
Can you rent a place ( with a pool) easily ?
Is it best to buy ready built or build yourself ?
Is the market at its peak or is there still room for growth?
Any info appreciated.
Sue

Glad you're loving it there. Isn't it great when folks just love a place from the outset? Enjoy!

Max,
We had the same restriction on our cards but we just phoned them up and said to extend to the maximum which is $2000 per card. They did it with no worries.

Hi Max,
Glad to hear everything is going well for you. We will be in Currambine in January and cant wait.
When you say flat screen TVs do you mean LCD style flat panel TVs or do you mean CRT TVs which have the 'flat' front screen? Just interested as we will also be down to the goodguys buying TVs and other stuff.
Good tip about the bank card - just out of interest. Any idea what the upper limit is for a typical UK bank card / credit card, when being used abroad?
Cheers
Dave

Shhh, don't let the cat out of the bag - Perth is the best place on the planet. Everyone will want to come here.
The doom and gloom brigade can all go to the less "isolated" Eastern States and enjoy their annual trip to the theme parks on the Gold Coast.

Rang education department and they sent me loads of infor through today - will also be sending my 2 girls to Beaumaris. The lady told me as our address is Delgado Parade they would have to find places for them. My eldest is 3 and will be 4 in August. The cust off point for free kindy is end of June so she will not qualify next year. I have to ring in January to book her in for the following Januray 2006! I have tried KidzBiz at Baumaris but a year long wait is on the cards - it's $50 per day there. Going to enrol the eldest for swimming lessons tonight so that should be fun! and ballet so she will be busy.
If you could see the biulding work going on here at the moment and the improvements to infrastructure it's incredible. We bought the house on Delgado for $540k and the agents reckon it's worth at least $700k now.
Simmo is the guy to speak to about renting in Iluka he has just done that and has bought a block on Delgado near our place. Don't see too many places advertised there though as the property prices are high.
I am not some sort of expert on the matter but done my research as best as I can and spoken to investors, agents and developers - this growth looks set to continue for the next 5 years at least. Well put it this way just bought another house and had an offer accepted on a third this week so that's where my bets are placed! We are not minted just very mad and now owe a lot more that we did in the UK - very different tax system here for investment properties though.
Anything you want me to find out on Iluka etc feel free be glad to do it.

This is me every day now!
