can somebody help me,??? we went to brisbane this year for 6 weeks and found that to get work in the building trade you have to get a licence to work for yourself, or it seemed very difficult to get a start with a company...this seemed because I am english.
I am a plasterer by trade doing dry lining inside and rendering outside.Do you have to get a licence to work in perth ???? also are there easier any ways of finding work so that me and my family can emigrate to perth and settle there.I am prepared to do anything just to get started.,I am really flexible due to being able to do plumbing, carpentry, roofing and most buildiing work.....any ideas at all would be most welcome as we returned to the uk most upset after selling our house etc regards cooperman....Anybody out there already who needs a good worker please reply also !!!!!!!!!!!!

Possibly you could work independently unlicenced. If you have queries about meeting necessary points etc to migrate check out this link:

Is sponsorship a possible solution, ie getting an Oz firm to give me a job before I relocate, cheers

your work background sounds a mirror of my hubbies. We have just sent off TRA application and used an agent as we were really stuck with no formal qualifications (I'm actually a teacher, but we needed extra points so have applied with husband's occupation, as bricklayer is MODL)
Don't know if it will help, but we were advised to concentrate only on the bricklaying aspects of his work, as the trades don't really cross over like here (i.e. there are fewer "general builders") As he has been self-employed for much of his life and is now Director of own building co., this made it really difficult to get references just for brickwork! We ended up doing a stat dec, getting refs from his business partner, clients, suppliers and accountant - all stressing the bricklaying side of his work!
Good luck - and like you my husband is not overly happy about working for someone else again, but then again he sees it as an opportunity to learn the rules, regs, methods, etc. in Australia, whilst being paid for it and not having to suffer the consequences of getting it wrong through ignorance of the "way things work" in another country.

Hi Draper
Does sound very similar, bit ridiculous that having project managed many jobs £10,000,000 + that i have to concentrate on Bricklaying!!!
Please keep me informed of your situation if at all possible, what is the tra skills test? I too can get references from Partner, Architects, clients, suppliers etc etc, have u been advised that this is sufficient, cheers

I'd suggest using an agent as, although I'd like to think myself far from thick(!!!) ,the guidance as to what exactly to include and examples of Statutory declaration and the immense amount of detail required, we would not have known, without help. Agent advised me today that TRA application has been forwarded for assessment and congratulated me on a "well-presented skill application". - Just hope it's enough!
Keep us informed of what you decide and how you get on.

So you don't need a licence to be a carpenter / joiner in Perth? That is where we are hopefully heading and my husband does mainly flooring work. Is there much of this sort of work about?
