Smile Getting a job before moving

Hi friends, I recently got my PR and now I am thinking about the next move,
I would like your point of view about first getting a job and then practicaly
moving to Ausie just to avoid worries of not having a job in a new country,
Do they hire people applying from outside Australia?

Thanks and regards,

This has been discussed plenty of times before, but conclusion is the same.

They do hire people applying from Outside Australia. But the chances are close to null. You will find it really difficult. Employers prefer candidates who are physically present in Australia and who can join the job immediately.

Give it a go but it is likely to be fruitless for most. Depends what you do I suppose.... Good luck though

I had my visa then applied for a job online, had a telephone interview and started when I arrived. I guess it might depend on your job?

It is worth trying!

I think if you are dealing with recruitment agencies then they won't give you the time of day until you are actually in country. If you provide them your CV then they can keep you apprised of potential jobs until your arrival. Best case to secure something before arrival is to apply directly to the companies you're interested in. I don't consider it impossible, depends what you have to offer.

I've seen this brought up lots of times - but considering the number of people who come out on 457s (and so by default have a job before they get into Australia) then its very possible to get a job before you get here.

Would hugely depend on what type of work you were looking for!

I think it depends on a number of things, mainly
where are you going?
what do you do?
how old you are? well, actually how senior you are?

I have just arrived and have been pleasantly surprised by the Sydney job market, I am a Chartered Accountant, ten years post qualification experience.

It has picked up from earlier in the year when there was apparently nothing. I am senior enough for there not to be loads of jobs, but not so top executive that I am in the headhunter bracket.

There are a number of jobs that I have been put forward for and I am not having to go for any old job which I thought I would, I have been in the position of telling recruitment agencies that I don't want to be put forward for some jobs. That said, I came with pretty low expectations (would I get any kind of job?). I am compromising compared to a bouyant market, but not as much as I thought I would. Salaries are probably also down as supply exceeds demand.

But back to your question, I would say don't bother, it will only delay your departure, you are very unlikely to be successful and it will restrict your choice of job as very few if any will consider you and you can't get the "vibe" of where you will be working if you aren't here.

I have heard numerous stories of people getting jobs in UK and getting their shipment paid for etc. But I think that is only in a bouyant market and only in some sectors, basically Michael Page and the like were sending over loads of recruiters from teh UK and shipping them over, but not in the current market.

It would have been very nice to have someone pay for my shipment, but basically I would say just get over here and get stuck in. But I think you need to tell us what you do, where you are going and what level you are, as I suspect the slight recovery in the recruitment market is only in certain sectors and certain cities.

I should add that people I know that had got their PR visa came out on validation trip and to try to get work before moving permanently, no luck (for either of them), even when you are here the biggest hurdle for you first job is "will you stay?" so that is nigh on impossible to answer properly if you aren't even here yet.

As for getting 457 before you arrived, I'd be interested to hear if anyone is getting that in the current market and if so which location or industry? I have met a lot of 457, but most have come on working holiday visa or a holiday and persuaded a company to sponsor them once here. And all I know were in a bouyant market. It sounded like 457s were very easy to get then.

Good Luck

Thanks,
If you 10 years good experience in Oracle then it might be worth trying the agencies although it will be MUCH, MUCH easier if you are actually here.

So how do people manage to get an employer sponsored visa (121) then ? Would you have to travel to Oz, find an employer who will sponsor you and then come back till it's gone through?
