Default Friendliness

Can anyone help?
We are in the process of emigrating and lots of questions have arisen, but someone asked me the other day if the Australians are friendly towards new immigrants. and
Would your children be picked on at school as they are English? etc
I have to say this did get me thinking and worrying.
Like most places I suppose it will take a while to be accepted but as the process of emmigrating is hard enough it would make it a lot harder to settle if you felt that you were not liked .
Has anyone had any bad experiences who have recently migrated or are the Australians a warm welcomingbunch of people.
:scared:

I am not out there yet but the feedback from the site seems to suggest that the kids will get on just fine. Try not too worry too much, we are all applying to go and we are the friendliest forum in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our 2 kids have got on fine and have made lots of friends already (They started school last week of term in December) They have not been picked on for being poms.

Having said that its not going to be the same everywhere. Wherever you go in the world there are idiots. If you say moved your kids from a school in London to a school up North would they get picked on because their accent was different? The answer again would depend on the school and the kids there.

My little boy (6) is already using Ozzy phrases and words and I suspect in a years time he'll have the accent to. As long as your kids get along with others they will be fine.

With regards to us geting on with people we have not had any problems being poms. Again there are idiots who will cause trouble but they are everywhere in the world

Our boys have an english accent (although they are actually australian) & have no problems at school. More problem at home from me when they correct the way I speak . No problems with an english father. In their class at school they have about 5 or 6 different nationalities including welsh, canadian, american, pacific islanders, maori & a couple of others & all the kids get on fine together. My only comment would be that perhaps you might get more problem with teasing etc in much older kids ie older teens, but it pretty much depends on the kids involved. Teasing & bullying isnt restricted to those with a different accent!

Honestly, I agree with HUP, most people are fine & actually interested, you get the occasional tosser, but its not that common & you will get them everywhere!

Thanks for the comments that has reassured me.Our children are 5 and 18months so they will be fine.
If there is a good mix of people of different nationalities from what I am lead to believe in Perth then hopefully most will get on,just as we do in the UK,although I am sure not everyone will agree with me on that one.
Hopefully like you say all of us on this site waiting to go will be there one day and we are all a friendly bunch anyway!!!

Our daughter wasn't picked on because she was English and I don't know anyone whos children were.

I have found everyone to be friendly but no more so and no less than anywhere else I have been.

If you are friendly then you'll mix well and make friends easily.

Is that ok pp?

Yeah, thanks, my son will be 13 in Aug and this has worried us a little...not so much the teasing, just the move...but if we do eventually go I suppose we will just have to give him loads of support
