Oh it will happen. You see, most aussies don't like immigrants. We will "put up" with our pommy and kiwi cousins of course, but don't expect the red carpet laid out by the hard working aussie tax payer.

It will have to go through parliament to become law so if your interview is coming up I can't see this legislation rushed through. I reckon you'll be OK. In fact I reckon it's all bluff and bluster, if it does happen it won't be for a while.

when we came we were told it would be 2 years before citizenship...then we were told 3 years in July...now we might have to wait 4 years!!! jeeze, might be back in UK by then....but at least i speak English

To try and qualify this is something, I read recently on a website, when checking for citizenship requirements:
This is a newsletter off the site
It mentions about how it asked the question about what happens if you are already here?
We will wait and see the outcome of all of this, we are hoping it stays the 2 years.
We are up for citizenship early next year.

As for the 4 year wait, it probably states 1 year on the Statute. The remaining 3 year delay reflects the typical Oz service level.
Still, it's good to see that the great unwashed are forced to wait before they join us as Aussie citizens.
