Here goes!!
Back in the late 1900's the Lancashire and Yorkshire Coal Miners went on strike. The earl of Crawford who lived in 'Haigh Hall', Haigh in Wigan gathered all the miners together for a meeting. Now the Earl of Crawford had many business ventures which were suffering because of the effects of the strike. His speech was along the lines of "You are responsible for the devestating effects of unemployment your selfishness brings, you are effecting the jobs of your fellow man around you and the local economy because of this disagreement" With that the Wigan Miners went back to work and all the other miner across the 2 counties said that the Wiganers ate "Humble pie". therefore we are called 'Pie Eaters'.
Although I have shopped around Manchester and Bolton and seen more people eating pie's than in Wigan.
Hopefully this has added to that little store cupboard everyone has in their brain of USELESS information.

My kids think I am deranged and my husband is about to call for an ambulance. The tears just roll down my face when I read the smart witty comments.
I really believe you guys (welshboybilly, PP, nosuchluck, The pleasance gamily, whiskey and everyone else who contribute to the hilariaties of achieveing the dream) could make a fortune getting together and writing the 21st centuries version of only fools and horses. What with the weigh-in etc.
Keep it up January for me is a VERY VERY depressing month.
I look forward to being amused, as I am back to work tomorrow and I am not looking forward to it.
PS. you lot also give excellent advice
Cheers Joanne

And so say all of us. Only talking tonight about how addictive this is getting, to the point of it being reason to cart me away. Who else sits up 'til nearly midnight - dreaming of Oz and rapidly scanning for info or giving info.
The best are when Steve Bannister gets on a subject that he feels strongly about - then it gets gripping.
Keep strong everyone and hang on in there ..........

I just came across you guys/this site today and I have been on and off a hundred times - too much tie on my hands twiddling my thumbs waiting for my flight at the end of the month.
The pie looks gross....though will I manage to live without the macaroni pies they sell here in Glasgow (...or the Irn Bru, the sense of humour...the rain, the cold!!! )

Never could bring myself to try the battered Mars Bar - seemed to be a waste of a perfectly good Mars Bar. Deep fried Pizza a personal favourite but am on health kick (except the damn fags, tomorrow, tomorrow) in advance of trip in case of medicals
