Question Flying with 10 month old

Hiya,

Has anyone here had any experience of flying the longhaul UK-->Oz with a baby? We are in the position where we must decide on a toddler ticket or child ticket. What are the cots like that they provide? Can you take your rear facing car seat and use that?

We are thinking of going Singapore Airlines, how are they for toddlers?

Do they provide food for babies, milk etc, or do you have to bring your own?

Any other information re: babies and flying would be greatly welcome.

Many thanks Paul

Hi Paul

We flew singapore with our son Charlie at 9 months old. Went really well, they were great with Charlie and took him off for a walk around the plane a couple of times. The basinette was perfect for him and the seats have more leg room where the basinettes are. Make sure you specify a basinette when booking and then confirm it later with Customer Services at Singapore airlines.
We didn't even consider taking car seat as they aren't legal out here anyway.
They provide jared baby food, a couple of nappies, tiny packet of wipes and a little toy. We took our own milk.
When we flew in Nov 04 Charlie was 18 months, this time around we booked him a seat, and also a basinette which was the right decision. Charlie is a pretty easy going baby, so it all went fine. A little harder at 18 months as he didn't want to sleep and needed more entertaining, but we stopped off in Singapore for 3 days which broke up the journey nicely.

Hope this is helpful

Yup we flew singapore with a nine month old. They are by far the best airline for kids.

They kept taking her off us to for breaks and playing with her etc. They are genuniely interested in children.

The cot thing hang off the bulk heads and are a like a small box with straps, and you get the seats facing the bulk head.

You can sedatives for the baby from your doctor if you think they won't sleep at all.

They provide a small choice of food, and some toys if I remember correctly, but most airlines aren't bother by lots of extra hand luggage with toys/food etc.

The fun starts in other countries, like I think they ween the kids at a slightly older age, and the nappy sizes are different.. a bit of trial and error.

Hi

We've done long-haul many times. With a kid that old I suggest:

1. Get a night flight.
2. Ensure the kid is very tired before you get on the flight.
3. Feed the kid with, say, milk, as you ascend - helps deal with the air pressure.
4. Feed the kid on the descent - same reason.

Can't write about Singapore Airlines as I usually fly Cathay Pacific, but we rarely got the bulkhead seats with the cots upfront - we asked too late. These seats get taken so quickly. Certainly don't leave it 'til getting to the airport to ask for these seats. Some airlines make allowances for people with kids, others like BA won't let you check in early if you have a kid, then make you wait 'until you get to the airport at which point some else has the seat.
