I know there are a lot of flies in Oz but do you get loads in Adelaide?

My 4 year old is terrified of them.

You were quite right, some flies do indeed bite. The march or horse fly will draw blood.

I must admit this comes up year on year, and I have to say prays on my mind.

Is it a seasonal thing, or year round with worse times ??

I have heard it said avoid watery housing areas, but are there regional differences as well ??

On a positive note it keeps the OH from nagging..... keeps:thumbsup: the mouth closed in case of swallowing an aerial raisin.

Its seasonal.

Summer is worse, and especially after rain.

It's totally dependent on where you live. Urban areas have far less flies than country areas. Worst flies I ever saw were in country WA but I believe VIC have bad areas too.

I'm in beachside Sydney and flies are only a problem for a couple of weeks during early summer. Rest of the time - nothing. We don't have fly screens on any doors or windows in our house and neither do any of our neighbours. In some parts of the country you couldn't survive without them. ;)

Any ideas how to keep them away.. can't stand the things :sneaky:

I use a neted hat which the locals find hilarious but who give a fxxk what you look like, Then I spray the hat an net with aeroguard which keeps them off my face for a couple of hours, Aeroguard on the arms and legs to reduce the mozzie bites. Don't believe the hype that you only get them in summer, they are worse in summer but you start getting them as soon as the temperature gets in the high 20's around now to april so at least half the year.

They are not like the flies you get in the uk that by and large keep to themselves, here they target a section of your face or an orifice and won't give up until they got right up your nose, literally.

Aeroguard is the chemical solution. Don't bother with the instructions that say "spray it into your hand and rub it on your face". Hold your breath and just spray it on - liberally. Apparently Aeroguard was developed by the CSIRO for one of the Queen's visits.

So the CSIRO people came up with Aeroguard to stop The Queen flying around Australia annoying the bloody shit out of people?!?

Sounds like I need to check out Beachside Sydney when over next year then.

Is Sydney generally known for its lack of flying annoyances ??

I'm in Coogee and as a rule we have very few bugs. Few flies, no mosquitos and only see a huntsman about once a year.

BUT we do have giant cockroaches () around here and currently a plague of disgusting bogong moths - so it's not all good. ;)
