They are March (or horse) flies, they are from the Tabanidae family. They actually suck blood, only the female of the species though, the male feeds on nectar and plant juices.

In Qld they are called Marsh Flies

Right, I hate flies, didn't know there were so bad at this time of year laready.
Doeas Tas have such a fly problem, cos that could be the deciding factor for me!

We definitely have March flies down here. Sometime known as biting flies or horse flies.
