I'm a newbie to the fishing lark, went fishing on Saturday morning out of Poole Harbour (yes it was freezing) and caught my first ever fish - a Mackerel.
All in all we caught about 40 of them so we divvied them up at the end of the trip and everyone took some home. We cooked them for Sunday lunch and I ate the actual fish I had caught. Amazing. Can't wait to do it again. I've always wanted to catch my own tea and now I've done it! |

Originally posted by nicholls clan Well done, it is a nice feeling to get one on the line isnt it? Did you do the honours and club it over the head or do you just leave it to gasp in the boat? Just wondered as I can not bare bashing them on the head, never ever get it right. I usauly just throw it to one side, but can almost hear it saying "help me.... help me", just like the film the fly!!!! |

Originally posted by nicholls clan This is from the New Zealand fishing site... How on earth would you club this one over the head??? It would frighten the life out of me seeing that come towards my dinghy on the end of my line. :scared: OMG! Our skipper on Saturday was keen to point out that when posing for a photo you should always push the fish out in front of you as far as possible so that it looks much bigger in relation to your body. Guess this guy didn't have to do that though. Fish for dinner for the next month then! |

Re: Fishing anyone?
Originally posted by itsasecret oh my god how will i cope? i may have to change locations? maybe to SA.. (only joking.) this means I will have to buy new tackle... and try some spinning/lure fishing. Im looking forward to trying this style of fishing so it would be good to meet up when i get out there (back end of next year.)... would love to have my own boat too. |
Originally posted by DagBoy You can fish in most freshwater rivers and tidal waters. I do not think you would see many anglers fishing the rivers - most will be in the tidal parts - hoping to catch something that is good eating. Your best bet would probably be the stocked impoundments or Dams (that is a lake/reservoir to a Pom, because, of course, we know that a dam is the wall that holds the water in). You need a licence to fish these here in Qld - useful info is here and the related pages. Cheers, DagBoy Not all dams you need a licence. North pine dam (ie Lake Samsonvale) is one which you need no licence to fish it - Land Based. You only need a licence from a boat which they issue only a few hundred a year(two hundred I think.... it's to keep the boat traffic down off this particular dam) .But anyway, if you fish from the land in this dam you need no licence. The others yes. North Pine Dam is one of the closest to Brisbane and I do think it's the only one around Brisbane which you need no licence to fish it (land only) . Species there include Bass, Yellow belly , silver perch, catfish and Saratoga. I'm more of a salt water fisho but have fished the North pine a few times recently in the past couple of months (first time for me fresh water fishing) ... my catch included a few bass and a couple of yellow belly ( all were released. The bass were small ones under the 30cm mark round 27, 28, but the yellow belly was above legal length.. that was around the 35, 36 cm mark) . Lures or live bait are used here, mine were caught on live bait (thanks to some kind chinese people who explained the best bait, and method to me as I was new to this frewshwater fishing lark) , didn't have any luck at all with the lures. Cheers:) Ps Clan I was not attacking you, my, you're a bit sensitive aren't you. You may have noticed that :) smiley thing at the end of my post . I was merely answering your question - your first post headed under the title" Fishing anyone?" and "is there any fishing clubs with poms who organise things?" .. you were looking for a club which poms organise the things. I wondered why limit yourself to a fishing club which has only poms,as you will miss out on different experiences when you mix with all people from all walks of life. sorry to have upset you..I'll remember in future not to answer your threads if you're that sensitive |

Petey never caught one but if I am not mistaken they are now an aquarium fish. They are kept by a lot of Japenese and chinese in aquariums at home. I used to know a guy in Parramatta who had and shop and he sold a lot of Saratoga's. They can grow big and people do not realise this which becomes a problem with small tanks=big fish. |
