I found a couple of good chippies in Oz, unfortunatly most of the shops serve up chips that resemble deep fried cardboard. They also do not put vinegar on chips, just salt.

Hi guys,
would love to know what you think of the old potato cake, i craved them after a few beers when in UK, YUM!!!! I like it that you can get the option of grilled fish over here as well, is usually nice, and the cod is generally smoked cod, not the cod as you know it. X

Oh chicken salt the bain of my life many a time i've cooked a gormet meal since returning from our trip to oz to be greeted with the cries of the other half winge "wish i had some chicken salt" winge he went throught tubs of the stuff over there ..unsure of ingrediants though think its made from chickens feet cos they are salty arent they

Personally I'm glad the temptation has been removed (we had several chippy's close by in Newcastle). I am eating alot healthier out here and feel alot lot better for it and can get back into all my summer stuff - yippeee!!!
Once in a while will try out the recommendations in Perth, but for me, once we start to explore, a good Ruby Murry is what I'm after, gonna be trying out 'Nine Mary's or Chutney Mary's' can't remember the name
For me this has been about a lifestyle change, which has included my food intake. I have alot more time to cook now, so don't rely on 'junk food' so much - don't need the comfort foods now, as I'm not totally knackered after spending 5 hours in a car each day
But good luck to all those who seek the holy grail................

Well we have given up with fish and chips in the UK, totally disgusting, greasy chips and skin left on the fish. Give me my fantasitic fush and chups from NZ anyday. Also had some great ones in Brisbane, always cooked fresh not sitting in a hot draw basking in fat.
cheers

I was in Queensland in July and we found a real chip shop!!!!
We were staying with relatives in Runaway Bay and went to the chippy which was under new management since the last time my mother in law had used it. Anyway, the owner loves yorkshire and also english chip shops so he's gone and opened one, the only difference being that they don't use dirty fat, it is changed regularly. Been to a chip shop many a time in Oz and the main fault I find is that they don@t sell mushy peas!!! Well guess what???? This chippy does those aswell!!!! Are you impressed yet cos there's more......We told the owner it@s a shame he didn@t do pototo fish cakes-2 many different names to list them all but basically a fish surrounded by potato then battered, the owner asked my mother in law if she would mind going in for a day(as she mentioned she had previous experience) and show him how they are made so he could add them to the menu!!! I will definately be going there again. Can't remember exact location but I can always ask the inlaws

They all offer salt, disgusting tasting ketchup and BBQ sauce, but rarely vinegar. How can you eat chips without it? (oooh sorry, that was a bit of a negative post there wans't it. Forgive me!

Our chippies round here all seem to serve 'today's catch' fish (so very fresh) and 'proper' chips, fried in veg oil. (I've not had any yet, as I ration my chip intake to about twice a year, but people tell me they're very good).
