Re: Finding work in Australia - Let's hear your experiences
We're here on a permament via courtesy of my wife who is a registered nurse. It took her one email and two phone calls to be offered a job + visa in Perth.
As for me, I contacted recruitment agencies in Perth a couple of months before I arrived. When I arrived I went to see them, showed them my passport and discussed my CV. I was told that it would be tricky to get the first job as companies wanted local experience. Stick with that for a few months and you're ok. The upshot was, two days later I got an interview and I've now been there for 4 months. Its contracting, but it pays 100K approx a year - less than I was on in the UK but I'm not as senior. We've just bought a house in Duncraig on the strength of that job. [I'm an IT developer in J2EE/oracle/what-have-you] To be fair, if you are in a specific profession that is useable worldwide [science, engineering, IT, medicine, law etc] you WILL find a job here. It might not be quite what you had in the UK, but you will get something. BUT DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE UK !!!! If you wait until you arrive to find something, you are wasting time. And plod away at it. I've found that once your established, working in the UK gives you quite a boost over the 'locals' as regards experience, expertise, etc. p.s. Someone mentioned about people here don't think outside the box. I've found it professionally and so has my wife. If it isn't written down as a policy or instruction then it doesn't exist - why is that ? What happened to personal initiative ? |

We found it easy. I am a clerical worker, I found a job within a week of landing. Husband is an accountant found a job in the 2nd week of landing in Australia. We both got offered the very first job interview we attended.

I totally agree. Do your home work before leaving UK. I too got a contract job before leaving London at 115K + free beer on Friday !!! which was less than what I got in the UK except never got any free beer on Friday. 5 months down the road I quit the contract job and got my self permi job for 110K. Do know how one could survive in Sydney with less than 100K (Family)
Mind you...I am in Mobile telecom...the market sucks even thogh I was lucky.

How did your interview go last Friday? Mine with the recruitment agent went OK - I've got a 2nd interview with the company tomorrow :scared: Keep telling myself that it doesn't matter if I don't get it but I'm still really nervous :( |

Easy peasy! I'm a nurse and I got sponsored so i had my job ready for me when i arrived. Was very unnerving tho but luckily it's not bad. If i had of known what i know now tho i wouldn't have come out on a temporary visa. Would have waited longer in the UK for a permanent one. Personally i have found that you have a huge disadvantage on temporary visas.
