Re: Finding work in Australia - Let's hear your experiences
I think it's not easy to find work here in Oz....
Most of the jobs i applied for i never get a feedback from agencies or companies... if I get feedback they will say that I was unsuccessfull. Most will say I do not have Oz work exp. Well i think that's very stupid.. i have working exp in UK and in India and work is work... ppl in Oz come naked to work or work differenlty as in UK...or any other part of world? A job is advertised by many agencies... i got interview call from 3 agencies for same position with same company.. and one job is advertised in all job websites..... I was here in Dec2005 .. satyed for 2 months... have 3-4 interviews... no gud.. went back to London to work on 3 months contract. Its been 3 weeks.. i came back to melbourne and have 7 interviews. Today my confidence is shaken... last week i had a really good interview for app support position in a company and today i recd email that i was unscuessfull.I thought i did really well in interview... technical interview was fine.. i answered all qestions ok... i dont know what happend... my Cv is 3 pages long... should i write whole ****ing histrory wat i did at work? I am off my own....I am lucky that i have a gud mate here in Mel and i am satying with him... but for how long...?? i need a job... i am living on my savings... moreover i am fed up sitting at home searching for jobs, going to interviews......i need a JOB!! Well i am still tryin and still hope that i will get a job. Down but not out!! Cheers, Sonu |
Re: Finding work in Australia - Let's hear your experiences
We arrived in Adelaide 13 months ago. I got a job as a Dental Nurse within 3 days of arriving, and stayed there for 12 months, I have just started a new job closer to home, but took a drop in pay and a drop in hours to do so.
Partner (mechanical craftsman) has had 3 jobs, and took a pay cut compared to the UK. 1st job lasted 4 weeks, and was an accident waiting to happen, 2nd job lasted 5 months, not happy there, 3rd job he loved, and worked his socks off to impress them, he finished the major projects they had for him to do, they then gave him his notice saying that they did not have enough work for him to do  . He has had major problems finding work since then, he can get a job about 90 min drive away, for poor wages. or a job which is permenant late shift, or permenant night shift. which means we would never see each other. Good jobs in Adelaide seem hard to come by. That is why we are now looking at other states. K |
Re: Finding work in Australia - Let's hear your experiences
I haven't read any of the previous posts, because the more time I spend on BE, the more depressed I get.
I was over in Melbourne in Feb 2006. Really just to look around while my application for a business visa 163 was getting started. While over I was offered a job. Fantastic opportunity, outside the city in the Yarra valley/yarra ranges area. I kept looking around at businesses, but decided to take the safe route and dropped the application process for the 163 (and wrote of 2 grand in charges already incurred) and went for the job. It is now almost 6 months later, and they still havent even started the application for the 147. Repeated phone calls & emails, but always being assured everything will be fine, and that they are still very serious about the job offer. I still do beleive that they are serious, but I wanted to fly on the 2nd Jan, but I don't see a chance of that happening now. I need to give 3 months notice at work being a director & shareholder, and I need to sell my house. I cannot do either until the visa is in the bag. If they start the application this week, the visa wont be cleared until the end on August, and that probably leaves things too tight. I'm still being postive about everything, but I cant do a bloody thing until the visa process starts. time for another  thats better. :( |

Feedback from a recent interview included the statement that the job had gone to a young lady 24 weeks pregnant, with the explanation that if it had been private enterprise, they could have told her to come back when no longer pregnant. Because it was the government it was considered too risky not to employ her....... |

catch 22 situation - In my opinion Australian population is too low, hence few job. Therefore, more immigrants will create more jobs. Also, lots of Aussi travel abroad for few years to earn big money from the UK or USA and some come here from UK to fill up those jobs.
I was lucky I secured a job before arriving to Syd in April 2005. Never know I could loose by job any day....if so I will contract 6 months in the UK or Europe and the remaining 6 months I shall chill in Aussi !! |

The HR staff never visit the sites (or at most may do so once or twice in their career) and the communication is awful. They also use agencies and the less said about them the better  . When Ian got this job I had to organise the video conference facility in Belgium as they couldn't get it sorted. It took be 5 mins searching on the internet and a few phone calls not exactly difficult yet you would have thought that I had found the cure for the common cold the reaction I got from the agency. I know that it was this woman's job but in the end we just wanted to get out here. We are lucky that we only really had to deal with all of this from the comfort of our house in Belgium with regular money still comming in, I really feel for those that are having to deal with this to get a job while over here and not earning. Even if they don't stay for ever they will plug a real gap here while the homegrown staff learn from them. Instead they are happy to send senior staff who have been recruited from other industiries to the UK for a year to train them up  .

Nicky It's an issue which really concerns me when I think of the future for my own children. I'm not sure whether the cause is cultural, educational or what but it really does concern me and it is one of the reasons why - in spite of the weather - we will probably not stay in Australia for ever. |
Re: Finding work in Australia - Let's hear your experiences
Hi,
My hubby is a Wall and Floor Tiler. When we lived in Melbourne in 2003, he got a job within a few days, just by walking into a tile shop and leaving his card. This time on the Gold Coast it took 2 months. Most of the tile shops he went in said things were very quiet, and eventually he took out the Yellow pages and phoned through all the tilers, got offered 2 jobs, and now works with another guy who has loads of work, so all worked out in the end.
