I had it sickeningly lucky I have to say...

I wasn't even looking for a move to Australia... I was in a job in the UK (same as the job here), and during the course of a project meeting I met the manager of a team from Oz who do the same work as me. We were talking casually about careers and she said that chances would be better in Oz, because of the logistics of the way the company is set up.

She then said "But you wouldn't want to move to Oz would you?", I said Yes, and she said she'd look out for a job for me. 9 months later I got an email asking when would I be able to move.

2 months later I started work. It's the same job I had before, but with a 50% pay rise (unfair pay practices in UK org), and a lot less stress.

I was originally looking to take a promotion to USA, but as it turns out - those people all got made redundant last month. So yeah, lucky is an understatement...

Have to say, don't think it is cultural.

I've seen the worst in all countries.

Specifically, I think working for the public sector is a pain and it breeds a sort of laziness and ineptitude - until you get that cushy number and then the sun breaks out of the clouds!

I haven't found a good job up here yet so I'm opening my own business. Jobs here are fairly limited to the hospitality industry and other tourist outlets, which I had quite enough of some years back now. Saying that, ideally I'd open a European wine bar up here. There are plenty of gaps in the market though.

Don't mate. You're still waiting for that break which might be just around the corner. I admire the fact you loved your public sector job in the UK - I know stacks of people who don't!!

I think the public sector is a double-edged sword - when it's good, it can be very cushy, when its not its the pits!!!

I also feel that I have been very lucky. Found a job on the GC within 2 weeks of arriving here - salary was not the best - but good enough to make ends meet - so I took it - even though it was a very junior position for me - but decided I needed an in and could prove myself. I worked my backside off (literally - lost 10kg with all the stress and hard work) - but it paid off and within a few weeks I was given a more senior position and by the 3rd month (just prior to the end of my probation) got a job offer from the opposition with a 50% increase!

Absolutely love my job and the people I work with - couldn't possibly have imagined a better working environment and not having to work myself to death anymore as I am now in a management position ;)

So - don't be fussy - be prepared to start at the bottom and prove how good you are!

Just to add my experience to date with employment searching.

Got the visa 136 about 4 weeks ago
Sent a CV/resume into 1 recruitment company in Perth
Got an almost immediate response and they lined up a phone interview
Did the phone interview at 7.30am and have been successfully offered the job.
However, we are only arriving in mid Sept and they are looking for me to start ASAP...and we want to travel around first....so it looks like I have to turn them down.

All in all though a promising start to job hunting and I will have alot more confidence once I start looking after traveling.

cheers
n

PS I am a chemical engineer
