Thanks for that. But can someone give me a comparison between the wages of Secondary School Teacher here in Oz (Vic-Melbourne) and those in UK? My wife has been getting few offers to teach in UK. After all the stories that i read on forum, I am trying to make up my mind.

Try this link for full explanation of pay rates www.nasuwt.org.uk

Latest pay rates for UK teachers (same rates for primary and secondary teachers) are:

Teachers' Pay England & Wales April 2003

Classroom Teachers
Inner London
M1 £18,105 £21,522
M2 £19,536 £22,977
M3 £21,108 £24,573
M4 £22,734 £26,226
M5 £24,525 £28,041
M6 £26,460 £30,000

Threshold / Upper pay range
Inner London
U1 £28,668 £34,002
U2 £29,730 £35,673
U3 £30,831 £36,774
U4 £31,968 £37,911
U5 £33,150 £39,093

M! - M6 are the annual increments, starting increment is I think, M1 from college - but not too sure, then progress 1 step per year.

If teaching in Inner London area use the appropraite scale.

Threshold means proving you meet certain standards, including gathering reams of paperwork, and having taught for some years. Then you go onto the Upper pay scale.

There are also scales for leadership and management, which seem to be covered by your "grade 3" teachers, those who agree to carry out certain management roles and hence get extra pay.

So after say 6 years teaching, having passed the threshold and at Au$2.65 to the £ you would be on £75,990.

There were also over 3,400 jobs advertised in the UK National Education Paper this week www.tesjobs.co.uk

whilst the WA education department advertised 4.

Unless there is somewhere else they are all being advertised.

Cheers

Sorry that table didn't set out correctly, the second column of figures is the Inner London pay scale.
