I agree, and I think the best way to describe the differences is that with the AUD it's economic uncertainty that's in the way, whereas in the UK it's mostly about political uncertainty... which of course could in turn have a strongly adverse affect on the economic outlook.

I saw that. And immediately afterwards the pound dipped.

""Sell everything except high quality bonds. This is about return of capital, not return on capital. In a crowded hall, exit doors are small."

Wow, those are quite strong words, but I certainly agree as to the notion of not holding any position when it comes to investments. I think sitting on cash/currencies is the way forward, and if the US stock market tanks then you will be in a position to do some bargain shopping. That's what I'd basically be holding out for now - the next stock market crash. It's bound to happen, as they do in history, and after that new historical records will be broken once the markets rebound, as they do in history.

Yes they were strong words. Good point about currencies. I have some residual pounds remaining after the purchase of our house in Australia so I'm holding out for significant exchange rate spikes/stock market crashes - whichever comes first!

Maybe right but RBS is a bank for f**ksticks

AEP was banging on about this on the Telegraph website - and he is nearly always wrong

As always, AUD is a sideshow in this game

It's all about USD as usual

For AUD it is more about China and the Yuan, and for GBP it is more about the USA and the USD. Other factors also come into the mix of course but any outcome is virtually impossible to predict.

IIRC the pound isn't doing well on the markets in light of the uncertainty on EU escape - plus Oz rebounded somewhat on Abbott getting the boot and it looking like Turnbull could get reelected.

Agreed. UK markets have the wobbles over the E.U. negotiations and pending in/out referendum. Perhaps the recent rise in AUD can also be attributed to the slight recovery of oil and other commodities

Yeah. I'm off to the US next week and keep a little eye on it. The Aussie has been rising against the US too.

The next time the US stock market tanks the AUD will be testing a rate of 50 US cents to the AUD. Even then I'm not certain whether the RBA will intervene at this level or whether they'll let all the panic-sellers close their positions and all all the speculators do their thing in the short term before moving in to stabilise things.

That's exactly what they did the last time around, with the AUD falling apart and no sign of intervention until all others did their thing and were finally out of ammo.

Hasn't the US stock market been tanking over the past month or so anyway?

I mean tanks as in truly takes a dive like the one that happened in 2007-08.

The Aussie Dollar went into even greater freefall then, taking a pummelling that I've never seen before. I wouldn't want to be holding onto too many AUD when the proverbial hits the fan the next time around over in the US.
