Basically, no, not quite.

1.

You are automatically British if your Father is British and was born in the UK
"You are automatically British if your Father or Mother is British and is British otherwise than by descent (ie. born in the UK or gained British citizenship via Naturalisation)"

2.

or you were born in the UK and one of your parents is British.
"or you were born in the UK and one of your parents is British or a permanent resident."


Otherwise you have to apply to be British

British citizenship law is actually fairly complex, possibly more so than it needs to be.

I thought Brits were 'subjects' as opposed to 'citizens' ?

Well, the political arguments would be helped if England a) had its own national anthem and b) had a national day off on the 23rd April.

Tell you what, let's just go for independence anyway - the yoo-kay is on it's last legs....
