Default engineering in melbourne

Hi,
Can anyone point me in the right direction.

We are hopfully going on a fact finding / validation trip to Melbourne later this year and not wanting to wast any time we want to go well prepared.

We would idealy like to live within 30-45min of work, Iam a mechanical fitter and was wondering were in and around Melbourne are the most industrial / manufacturing areas are located, ones to lookout for and the ones to avoid.

We would like to move to some of the most popular areas, eg Bewrick but to make it work initialy things need to work around me getting a job with the least amount of hassel (as is does for most people).

Thanks

Chris

I've copied bits of info from a private email I received two days ago. It is disjointed because I've removed info pertinent to moi.

"Werribee is located to the West of Melbourne where many industries are located. Much of the Petro-Chem and Refining industry are situated within 20km, and its easy driving.

The motor manufacturing sector are very busy at the moment and may have opportunities in the Electronic design areas. GMH and Toyota have plants about 20 mins drive from Werribee, Ford have two plants within 45 mins.

Engineers are a premium at the moment and should attract around $60,000:00 to $100,000:00.

You would expect to pay between $250,000:00 and $300,000:00 for a better than average three bedroomed house in Werribee.Werribee is around 25 mins from the city. Berwick might be a bit dearer but not much and takes around 40 mins. We have a very good system of freeways operating here, some of which have a toll on them.

Closer in to the city you might expect to pay $400,000:00 or more

Berwick is around 50kms to the East of Melbourne, nice progressive area with a child care shortage at the moment. Pay is crap though.

I wish you the very best in your adventure, I did it 35 years ago and never regretted it once, still don't."

My contact heads the engineering dept at a Tafe college.

My background is BEngMBA so I'm not a hands-on engineer (which end of the soldering iron do you hold?) and do commercial jobs. As I will end up in CBD or inner east working then Berwick is fav for me at moment.

Heading out to Melbourne on Tuesday and will be looking at Werribee, Ringwood to Glen Waverley, and Berwick. Love the houses in Berwick - price and design.

By the way, I found the longer I stayed on the internet the more options I identified resulting in more stress!

http://www.seek.com.au/index.ascx gives a geographical breakdown of jobs eg inner mel, west mel etc.

Ian
