Manufacturing in Australia is generally bad. Small companies, low technology.
Civil and Mining Engineering is the best thing in Australia in which to get involved.
The government kep trying to bring Professional Engineers over to Australia in the hope that they will start new companies etc. Sydney is no better than Melbourne for manufacturing. If you are over 40 and do not have any Australian experience, I would say that your chances of obtaining a good job are not high, but keep trying.
I migrated here in my mid twenties and so have a lot of Australian experience (i.e working in low tech cr.ppy companies that supply to the local market).

Try Perth, Adelaide or Brisbane....
Resources sector (mining/oil & gas/etc) is booming esp in WA.
I am inst/eleccy designer and have been swamped with calls from mainly Perth & Brissy agencies since putting my CV out. It took 2 days to get fixed up - that was over 3 weeks ago and I still get at least one call a day off the agencies offering me work. Rates are similar to back home(Manchester rates). Engineering in Melbourne is dead....they have leathered all the resources down the Bass Strait so its left a lot of people to fight over the scraps, whereas WA (NW shelf)especially is booming at the moment.
It was mentioned to me by one agent that they were having great difficulty finding eleccy engineers in perth - he even asked me to see if any of the lads back home fancied a visa!!!

also be prepared to work contract, staffy jobs(urrghh, i feel sick!!!) are a bit thin on the ground and obviously there are more pennies to be had on contract

Hi, I am Mandy68's husband and we located to WA. I am a degree qualified Instrument / Control engineer and I got loads of knock backs...now working on the tools again in mining. I am lucky that the group of people I work with are fantastic, and hope to pursue the engineering avenue with the company I am with. Have grown a thicker skin since coming out here, but considering we came out on my qualifications, my wife found work first and kept us afloat while I applied, and applied, and........

There is a growing demand for rail engineers in Victoria. Last week's age had about 5 posts in the state government alone. Moore policy planning than real engineering but a jobs a job. Expect to have to take a lower position and prove yourself all over again.

My hubby has been trying to get work as a Financial Controller since Nov, here in Melbourne. We were STNI sponsored as well.
He has currently got a temp contract for a month which will finish next week. He has applied for more than 100 jobs at all levels. He is not considered for junior jobs as they say he is too senior, but can't get a break into senior roles either. He has mail shot companies too.
The recruitment consultants say that he is one of the best on their books. Perhaps they are just saying that. They also say that Aussie employers are very narrow in their views when it comes to recruiting, and will not generally give someone a chance if they are outside the usual mode. Some recruitment agencies have been very hostile because we are English.
He has rejigged his CV so many times for specific jobs he has applied for. If things dont look up in the next few weeks, we are going home, as he has been contacted by a couple of companies there.
Good luck!

- senior jobs are very difficult to come by, so there is a lot of competition. This has been made worse by the economic slow-down. Oz is really a branch economy
- Oz firms are very risk-averse. They tend to take on people who have had similar experience in Oz (which is impossible to provide if you've just arrived as immigrants)
- there is some evidence to suggest that being a Pom - or at least non Oz-born - is a drawback when applying for jobs. Don't put it on your CV if you can avoid it
- agencies are probably worse here than UK. Agency margins are also worse in Oz, so they probably don't try as hard
- unfortunately, your best bet is via contacts or to approach employers directly. That's what I did and, after a while, it worked.

Financial Controller
Hi suffolkdiva,
If this was your husband's experience who is English and well qualified, what about brown-skinned Indian like me who is a junior accountant in Canada, waiting on results of my Skilled Designated category visa?
Has he found a job yet?
Good luck
Joseph
