Default Election and AU$

Are there any economists over in Oz with an idea of whether the upcoming election will have any effect on the AU$ either way?

I doubt it. Current AUD and GBP strength/weakness (depending on what you have!) is being driven by a weak USD. Current Aus. election has no influence on this.

If interest rates go up I would expect AUD to strengthen against GBP. The trouble is if rates go up too much then currency traders will dump the dollar as it reduces growth and damages the balance of payments. Look at what has happened to the NZ currency since Labour took power. It's gone straight down the toilet.
