Default From Drought to Flood in the Land of Extremes

I don't think we have many posters in inland Queensland, so that's probably why this is going virtually unnoticed, but as I'm half-way through a night shift monitoring it and need something to keep me awake, here is some info about the other side of the Aussie weather - the wet side.

Acting Mayor Kerry Hayes says the town has never experience this type of flooding before.

"I think this is the only situation that's happened here in four generations of my lifetime or my family's lifetime here that I've actually had to have anyone evacuated from the township," he said.

The river has cut the main access to the Capricorn Highway and throughout the day continued to creep into town.

A major shopping centre near the Nogoa River was closed and sandbagged this morning.

Premier Anna Bligh says 50 properties are isolated along the Belyando River on Queensland's central highlands, stranding 46 adults and eight children.

She says 75 people are isolated on properties in the Mirani area, closer to the coast near

The State Government has declared Emerald a disaster zone with more than 1,300 people have already left their homes and hundreds more are on standby as flood waters creep closer to homes in low lying areas

The state's booming mining industry expects tens of millions of dollars in coal production to be lost from the Bowen Basin. Already one company has stated it will not meet its export targets.

Some of Queensland's biggest coal mines – including those run by giants BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Xstrata – were last night expecting more flooding.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said damage to federal and state infrastructure would be at least $50 million.

Goodness! I hope that the flooding subsides quickly.

Most of the towns haven't had the rivers peak yet - some predicted to peak today, but likely to go on for some time to come. The pics of the Fairbairn Dam are scary, when you consider it was in a drought condition before the rain - and now is a couple of metres over the spillway.
They can't even begin to look at livestock losses yet.
