Here in Queensland, it's just a theory test. Cost was around $30 from memory (???I may have that wrong). People told us it would be a doddle, that you don't need to revise AT ALL and that it's dead easy to take in cheat notes as you basically do it in a crowded waiting room of a Queensland Transport office. WRONG!

Well, last time time I took any sort of driving exam I was 17 - I'm now 34 so good job I did revise the stopping distances. The worst things to get your head around are the give way to your right rules (they seemed to word the questions terribly!).

Just about scraped through thank goodness. Takes all of about 1/2 hour but you can take as long as you like, it's not timed or anything.

If you hold a Uk driving licence, no practical is required here.
Good luck next time

You can view the tests and have a go at them online (get a copy of the road code when you arrive as tests are based on it. It's free.).

Can`t say i know the area but i know where Kirky is, In saying that i`m looking at a map of Aus and i know where Perth is to, The only difference is i have been through Kirky but never Perth.

You will have to keep us up to date mate when you get there as we are hoping to head that way near the end of the Year, Need to get this App in soon

We are going for the 136 MODL so hopefully it desnt take too long

Oh, Sorry to hear about the Test thingy, the OH done her`s there too and had a nightmare of a time, The pass rate for that place is shocking ayway if its any consolation, Between than and the rules that they cant pass all tests even if they (including yourself) felt you did nothing wrong!

Trust me Family member Test Instructor ( NOT Springburn)

Have a great time when you get over there anyway,

personal Taste: have a go at the VB, many will disagree and go with the Toohey`s New

I've taken the test here in Perth. Seeing as you don't *have* a UK licence (and won't before you leave) you'll have to start from scratch here.

-That means a 30 question written test to get your "L's" (Learner licence)

-Then a practical that, in all fairness, is pretty straight forward and if you don't let nerves get you, you'll be fine.

-Then you have to log 25 hours of driving time in a log book signed by a JP and the person who drove with you. (They check the odometre for each trip etc.. and want variety - city streets, freeway, rain, sunshine, night, day etc..)

- Once the logbook is complete, you do a computer "Hazzard Test" which basically tests your reflexes and common sense while driving.

-Having passed that you get a provisional licence for 2 years (during which you have to display a red "P" front and back on your car while driving.)

-At the end of 2 years, you receive a full licence.

Can't lie... would have been A LOT easier to simply swap a UK licence for a full WA licence but it won't kill you to do it here.

Only if you haven't got a valid UK licence. If you do, it's a simple swap, easy-peasy. If you don't then yep... everything in my previous post applies. Sorry!

Oh Siren, thank god for that. I only have an easy swap then. Once you have the licence can you still drive to any state? I know this might be a daft question but I have to ask lol

It costs about $50 to sit the learners test. After that you can have a licenced friend "teach" you. You are not required to pay an instructor at all and you can do the practical test as soon as you can get an appointment. The 25 hours happens AFTER you've passed your practical test and is compulsory to get your licence. Again, you can do it with your partner or a friend. A JP is a Justice of the Peace. You need to get the logbook signed by one to prove that all that you both have stated in the logbook is true. You can find one in most shopping centres (just call to check thier hours - usually only 2h a day)

Your partner will not have to sit any tests. Simply walk into a licensing bureau and make the swap to a WA licence.

Yep! You can drive anywhere you want to in Australia! If you moved to another state, you might need to swap your licence then (just to clarify address etc...) but it would be just as easy as swapping the UK one.

Hi John,

Sorry to hear about the driving test.

Spoke to you a while ago now about bringing dogs over, did you manage to get yours sorted?

Ours arrived 2 weeks ago, I was really worried about how she would cope with the flight etc but we went to see her the day she arrived and she was fine.

We are living in Secret Harbour which is near Mandurah, if you need any help with anything or just fancy a get together then just let us know.

Claire
