Default Driving Statistics

Someone was asking recently how the driving statistics compared between UK and Australia. Well, I have found some figures, unfortunately not the same year but close, 2001 & 2003, and here they are:

Driving Statistics:

UK According to http://www.dvla.gov.uk/public/press_...03_18Feb03.htm

There were 29.7 million licensed Vehicles in the UK in 2001, and
the average mileage was 5,350 miles (8,609km) per year

and according to http://www.dft.gov.uk/pns/DisplayPN.cgi?pn_id=2004_0071

there were 3,431 fatal road deaths in 2002 (no 2001 figures)

and in Australia according to:
http://www.abs.gov.au/Ausstats/[email protected]?OpenDocument

there were 13.2 Million registered vehicles in 2003.
the average mileage was 15,300 kilometres,
and there were 1,634 fatal road deaths in 2003

Total Australian mileage = 13.2m x 15,300 = 201,960 million km
with 1,634 fatal road deaths that equals 1 fatality per 123,598,531 kms (Thats 8,078 years worth of driving)

Total UK mileage = 29.7M x 8,560 = 255,687 million km
with 3,431 fatal road deaths that equals 1 fatality per 72,886,916 kms (Thats 8,466 years worth of driving)

ABC does this include people knocked over by cars or just car accident.

If it does then it looks like the australian roads are a lot safer for our kids. thank god.

but the figures appear to be for fatalities only, not injuries ?

The figures relate to "deaths" in road accidents reported to the police. I feel that both figures will include any pedestrians also involved in road related accidents.

The figures can actually be looked at in two ways:

1: Australia "appears" safer in the fatality per km calculation

2: You could drive for 8,466 years in the UK, but only 8,078 years in Australia before becoming a statistic.

That 2nd one still has me thinking Time for a panadol !!
