For me, the long er you can hold onto a UK licence the better as regardless of how you drive and your own intuition and capabilities, you will get nicked at some time...
That's OK if you are on a Visitor visa

Try it on a PR visa, and you may find you have no Insurance if you have an accident.

The reason some service providers don't like foreign documentation (or even out of state documents in some cases) is that it's not so easy for them to tell if it's genuine or a fake.

I was on a student visa. Got 2 speeding fines. Paid fines and no points.

Applied for QLD licence months later, and it came with 7 points missing already ...
Bummer !! Do the points expire if I hang on to my UK licence for 3 years before applying for my Oz licence ????
I'm happy for the fines and points to be sent to the UK...coz I ain't there !!

Stu
A very interesting point when I rented a car in Sydney recently on a visit, (I hold an Australian licence). I got a quote, then the price dropped a fair bit when I produced my Australian licence, he obviously thought I was a tourist (i was) by my English accent and had quoted one price which then changed when I showed him that I was a local (according to my licence address, a friends house in Sydney). A very obvious duel pricing policy going on.
An Australian Licence is not hard to get if you have a full UK licence, so is worth getting, I think you may run into problems driving a privately registered car on a UK licence (not a rental car though)
