Downer renews attack on SBS journalist
Don't normally post cut n pastes but this one takes the biscuit It's been belted out on the local radio all day today.
"Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has attacked an Australian journalist, who was released after being held hostage for nearly 24 hours in Baghdad, accusing him of giving comfort to terrorists.
SBS journalist John Martinkus was about to leave Iraq when he was detained on the weekend.
Mr Martinkus and Mr Downer have already clashed over where the kidnapping took place.
Now Mr Downer has seized on reported comments from Mr Martinkus, saying the kidnappers had no reason to kill him, but did have a reason for beheading the British hostage Kenneth Bigley."

Re: Downer renews attack on SBS journalist
Downer took the journalist's comments out of context.
If I were to say the Iraqis were justified in beheading Ken Bigley then that would be a pretty outrageous statement.
If I were to say that the Iraqis felt that they were justified in beheading Ken Bigley, that would be different.
The journo pretty much said the latter and Downer was attacking the former.
What a dumb arse Downner is.

Well I'm no lover of Downer but I gotta agree with him on this one. I think it was a tactless & stupid comment by the Journalist.
Even if its not the way he meant it to come out it did sound pretty bad.

The only PR's that can vote had to be here, and registered to vote, many years ago.
The current rules for new voters, are that you must be a Citizen.

Wonder if Journalist had been killed would Downer have behaved the same as in the Balibo five murders
